Enclosed or Open deck

I am going to be getting a trailer in the next couple months to haul my Jeep, and sometimes my Wifes Jeep. I want one long enough to haul both when we are going for trips further than the local (2 hours away) park.

My thoughts are with a enclosed trailer I can haul some tools and other parts and lock them up, but also camp in it when needed. I love tent camping but it seems 1/2 the time I go it rains and setting up camp in the rain sucks. At night Jeeps can stay out and put the air mattress on the floor of the trailer.

Or a open deck trailer that will haul anything bigger. My best friend has a Jeep on 40's that would not fit inside a trailer and if I go bigger in the future with mine...

I am leaning towards the enclosed for the versitility of it but what are the pros and cons?

It think its obvious, the cost of the trailer.
An enclosed trailer cost allot more and your going to get lower mpg towing the enclosed trailer.

mpg concern

I own a 26' enclosed Cargo Mate & an 18' open Goertzen car hauler.

Asuming the same cargo & the same terrain the average fuel economy drop between the open trailer & the enclosed is 3 mpg. If you are in hilly terrain or in windy conditions it will be 4 mpg. If you are in a hurry that enclosed will cost you up to 5 mpg drop over the open trailer....basically that is a great big parachute you are dragging behind you.

The enlclosed is the only way to go if you can afford the fuel.

I would love to have both. I know the mileage would be a factor but I have to figure out how much... The "normal" once a month at least trip is 107 miles door to door. Not enough to rule out the enclosed. Maybe I can get one then convince the wife that I need the other one too. Probably not

Why no get a longer flat bed and build an enclosed room on the fron for tools/parts shelter.
