Dodge automatic

I am thinking about a new Dodge pickup with a Cummins engine but am concerned about the automatic transmission pulling a trailor. Will the automatic last?

Thanks for any input.

Edit: No "G" in Cummins Ed

What size trailer and what conditions do propose to pull in?

I have a 2005 auto and I will probably never pull more than 10-12,000lbs. What should I expect from the stock transmission?

DODGE AUTOMATIC

I'd be towing 12,000 # trailor. This is going to be my rig that we use in retirement.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the new tranny. If you're going to be pulling more than driving around then I'd opt for the 4.10 rear end other than that just drive an smile!

If it's the 48RE then it should last a long time if maintained well and not beat on. 2004-2005 trucks have the 48RE, some 2003's have the 47RE and some have the 48RE. If it is a H.O. motor than you more than likely have the 48RE, but check just to make sure. The 47RE are a good transmission just not a beefy as the 48RE.

The truck I just purchase has a manual, I use to own a beefed up auto and the engine was beefed up too, I choose a manual for different reasons.

Some people buy a heavy duty truck to drive and occasionally tow.
I bought a heavy duty truck to tow first although most of the miles will be just driving. There is just no way to describe the difference between towing with a manual and automatic. Like I said I bought a truck because I tow a 13,000 lb camper and second to just drive around.

My dad pulls 17,500 lbs with a 47 RE, use your head and they will last a LOOONG time. What other options are you thinking about?

Thanks for all the replies about the auto tranny. Does anyone know who makes a good brush guard and bumper-front and rear?

Cool

We got the 48re automatic on ours and pull a 5th wheel. Seems the only manual trans my wife doesn't have problems with is the one on her motorcycle.... The truck.. had to be automatic. Go figure

The auto 48RE should last a long time troublefree, unless you start adding modifications that up the horsepower more than say 150 over stock.

Get the Six Speed if your going to tow. Metal on Metal is much better than planitary on mush juice in the long haul. If Dodge were using a Allison I would not make this comment. The mush box is not even close to the Allison.

That Allison mumbo gumbo is just garbage.

Allison has a worst track record for break downs than Ford or Dodge. In fact Dodge autos have the least break downs. I don't remember the exact numbers but it was something like.
Dodge------3.2%
Ford--------3.6%
Chevy------4.2%

These numbers were for the transmission behind there diesels, not all auto transmissions.

The only thing the allison had over most auto transmissions was it's programming. That gap is rapidly closing and is about nonexistent anymore. If what I here is in the making for Dodge autos comes true Dodge will be on top and everyone will be goggling over their transmission. Can you say 6 speed auto with electronic tricks.
