I can't argue with that, but it still seems odd that a class C license allows you tow more than a Class B CDL,because it states on my license, may tow trailer under 10,001 lbs.Well not to worry, I've never been ask about weight and ever time I go in and out of Florida with a load of horses I have to pull in to the AG> inspection station ,one of my fellow haulers got stopped in Nebraska, driving an F250,with a four horse trailer,he was written up for no logbook,no Dot number , no MC number and no CDL,after he admitted he was being paid to transport the horses. Scared him so bad, he came home sold his trailer and quite hauling. I think I know why it says may tow trailer under 10,001 lbs, they must assume ,since I have the Class B. CDL,that my power unit is going to be over 26,000 lbs,so it would make sense that I could only tow 10K,other wise there would be no need for a Class A CDL.

I think we have beat this to death, but you CAN tow over 10,000 GVWR with your Dodge as long as the GCWR does not exceed 26,000. The law as written allows it, hundreds of people do it every day and so can you. Your buddy must have been driving a truck/tlr combo that exceeded the limit if he was written up for no CDL. However, if they allowed him to proceed with the trailer, loaded or not, then he wasn't cited for that. I've seen it happen in WY and MT and every time the driver had to unhook his trailer and the company had to send a driver with a CDL to pick it up. I believe the other charges, I've been caught with a not quite up to date logbook myself.

Yep. Your right.I finally figured it out. The Class B CDL has no effect on the trailer rating, the towing rating is the same for class C and class B,up to 26K.The difference would be the class B allows you to excceed the 26K combined weight, so long as the trailer is not over 10K. My truck is 12,200 gvw,so I can tow 13,800 trailer and still be legal,if my truck was 26K gvw, then my trailer could not exceed 10K. Finally figured it out,but if I was smart I wouldn't be hauling horses.LoL
