Delivering new cars - advice?
My brother in law is dealing cars over ebay, about 3 a month. We are looking into me doing single car hauls to deliver, instead of using a professional service.
My question is what legal aspects come with using my truck and a single car trailer to deliver cars that have been sold? What kind of insurance issues does this bring about? Is it a good idea?
I am thinking to offer the customers delivery under a professional rate, and bring in a little more cash each month.

A lot to be looked at here . If you owned the business selling cars and the company owned the truck delivering the cars , you would be a private carrier and not need authority . But since your brother owns the business and you own the truck , you probably would need authority . Your insurance agent would be the best one to ask about insurance requirements . I doubt the venture would be profitable though . Diesel prices are climbing rapidly and think how fast your truck would depreciate adding those extra miles . There are a lot of headaches delivering vehicles . Some buyers will be very picky and go over the vehicle checking for any sign of damage they can claim .
Even if you were considered a private carrier you would be considered an employee and would need a driver's file with a copy of long form physical , MVR , inquiries to past employers and more . You'll get posts saying don't worry about the DOT . The real concern is attorneys . The first thing attornieys check in a truck accident is legality of the operation and driver qualification.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Try it a few times, you'll know whether you like it and then put the pencil to the paper and see if it's worth it. I am not a pro, but that's what I would do. Esp if you already have a trailer. Good Luck.
If you get hauling commercially and do not have an authority, dot#, med, logs etc.... you will be sorry!!! The fines would shock you plus they will park you and you will have to find someone who does have all that. BTW by time you get all the required stuff and commercial liability and cargo ins you will spend between $7-11,000 a year!
YOU DONT MAKE MONEY ON 1 CAR!!!! TO MUCH HASSLE.

if you cross state lies wether or not its your stuff and your over 10k then you ned a us dot no. plus cargo ins so if something does happen its not out of your pocket. but their is a lot of headaches and money involved when you are going to do it right. Its cheap to do it illegal till you get caught then it will cost as twice as much. If you cant clear at least 3k to 4k a month hauling these cars then i wouldnt touch it

I know I am really going to make an effort to escape the grasps of the open road myself and go back to 9-5, since I am unable to work until late January or so I have time to surf and look!!
Whats going on I followed your posts when you were getting started and then the post about wanting a bigger truck and now it sounds like you are ready to quite?? Did it slow down that much or have the rates just not followed the fuel rise? I know ours have not!

For example im in oklahoma city now, and from clearwater florida to oklahoma city is about 1300 miles, and i grossed 2900 dollars coming here. So im still making money, I just want more. Now hopefully I can make another 2900 bucks coming home so i would gross 5800 bucks round trip. Thats not bad for 2600 miles total.
I decided I dont want a used big rig. Im gonna try and get a www.sportchassis.com but thats 100-130k. So odds are im gonna get f650 CC with a cat motor. U can pick a new one for around 75k. But let me say there is a big difference between both. I wanna follow that up with a 6 car either way. Now back to the original question. I would like to have both trucks runnin but my credit isnt that great yet.

I don't know where you're getting your car's from, but it's very very very rare to get that kind of money off Central Dispatch, espacialy for 3 car's at the same time, let alone one. You've alway's bragged about your money. I guess I'm lookin in the wrong place. I'm not trying to bust your chop's, but IF you did get that kind of money,,,it's very rare and I don't think guy's wanting to get into this buisness should base thier dissision on the kind of money you're claiming to make. I appoligize ahead of time. But prove to me that you make that kind of money all the time, or even often, and I'll publically appolize. And if you do, that's great, and I'm going to start following you and have you book my load's.

Truthfully, the price's are dropping for hauling car's. Everytime fuel goes up, it seem's like the price of car's come down. And you can just about forget about a fuel surcharge. They don't exist for hauling car's. I ask everytime, and 90% of the time get turned down. I think the broker's know 3 car hauler's can't take that $500 car for $250-$350, and are forcing us out of buisness. They know the guy with the 7-10 hauler has a huge payment to make, and will be forced to take the car at a cheaper rate just to make his payment. I see the car's stack up for a week, and then they're all gone at once because some poor fool had to make his payment's.
Now any car hauler's tell me I'm wrong. Of course this all goes out the window if you hook up with someone willing to pay right. Hopefully you will get all thier buisness.

Ok,,,I'm done now. It's just I've been stranded in Florida and can't get 3 going out to pay deccent. I appologise to all. Can't we still be friend's.

Wherever I go I make a mininum of 1.50 dpm. I get all my work off centralD. Yes prices are going down only because these new brokers are coming in trying to dispatch cars at25-35 cpm. While they are making 35-50 percent of load. WHAT A JIP. But as I figured out, Its hard enough to find 3 cars going 1000 miles from 1 city to another. Lucky to find them at 50 cpm but they are there. Thats what i originally did and grossed 3000 bucks for 2000 miles. Again, thats my minimum that i do. What i started doing was doing a few drops here and there making my way home and can avg more money by the time that I get home and working specialty vehicles like waverunners and boats and trailers whenever I get the chance. DAS always pays nice for there specialtys. Thats who I usually get my specialty vehicles from.
Now for my ride home im only making around 2000 grand. But im still above my mininum. As for the higher money vehicles, you just have to stayed glued to centralD cause as soon as there posted there gone.
Dont worry, we still friends.

Also note im not trying to brag and i dont need to prove what I make cause well, I dont need too. Cause if you know CD, you know there is good loads if you keep glued to CD. Also i pass out biz cards to people at dealerships on my route that i do and when they call, i charge 85 cpm.
Im just like any other trucker out there, just trying to make a buk as this industry is starting to take a crap while gas prices going up and brokers getting more expensive. It will pass by as there has to be a car carrier industry and the bigg car carriers wont work this industry just to make there payment. They will go back to there 9-5 jobs.
What the deal is is that we are buying 3 cars each month with personal money. Putting them on ebay and selling them. We both did the licensing course for GA and are all legal in that aspect.
I didn't think that there would be much of a problem since they are personally owned vehicles being taken to the buyer.
I don't see it as any different from selling your own car to a guy and trailering it to them. My thought was since I already have the equipment and a single car trailer is no problem to use legally, I would just offer the customers the option of me delivering the cars instead of messing with a big carrier.

Why is hauling one car such a big deal. A friend of mine has an open trailer and hauls his 1/4 mile drag car all over the place with an F-150. He has never had a problem. I know its different because it's his own car but if he was going to haul a car for me instead would he need to get all the paperwork mentioned?
Is hauling a car different than hauling the same weight of sand?
