Deckover or car trailer ?

I'm looking at a 22ft deckover (18 deck and 4ft dovetail with 5ft ramps) to use as a car trailer.

Opinions ...... Would I just be better off with a car trailer ? Personal experiences please

Pro's and con's ........

Thanks guys !

Either will work fine. Car trailer keeps the weight lower.

If cars then car trailers will have a lower breakover angle making it easier to load.

Deckovers are otherwise more versatile for everything else!

You can also get G/N style car trailers that have lower decks than the standard deckover.

Basically just the height, and maybe the spring type. The load angle will be greater, and much harder to load a low profile type vehicle. Longer ramps would ramp for the that.

I sold my new 20 foot deck goose/5ver car hauler because the wheels outside the trailer made it too wide for parking. It was also tricky when driving in narrow lanes. I plan a deck over to replace it. I have a couple of other trailers that are less then the 102 inches max and they are a breeze to tow around, you don't have to keep an eye on the wheels sticking out.

I agree with Busboy. Much easier to haul in city traffic. but i would go goose neck for best handling.

Once you start towing with a 5vr or GN you will never want to go back to a tag.

Someone told me that a deckover is top heavy compared to a low car trailer.

Any truth to this ?

Thanks !

In theory yes,

The higher the load the higher the center of gravity.. A properly sprung trailer will handle the load of a deck-over.. my 42. GN has a deck height of 46" but it handles it well..

You can get into wind resistance ect that will affect the millage. A deck-over is a better all around trailer but like posted if you have a low-rider then you want a low car trailer..

5ver is easier to hook up and no safety chains needed but you can put a goose hitch on a 2 5/16 ball mounted to the front of something for parking/maneuvering in close quarters. Many manufactures have quick changeable pins.
I agree a goose or 5ver does tow way better but a bumper pull trailer is less obtrusive when parked and cannot be seen over the top of a fence in a residential neighborhood.

deckover's are more versatile. loading pallets, lumber, drywall, hay, etc. is a breeze. Generally speaking, a fullsize p/u is difficult on a car trailer (bumper width vs. inner fender). Depending on the car and trailer, you may have to climb out the window and leave the window down to tow (fender vs. door).
GN trailers do spoil you, IMO easier going down the road and easier to back up.

My 1967 Dodge Coronet isn't lower........ I'm guessing a 4ft dovetail and 5ft ramps would be ok ?

Thanks !
