Class V hitch on 3rd gen truck?

I have a slide in truck camper, and need to use a 28 inch long extension to tow my trailers.
I see on the 3rd gen trucks the hitch receiver is built into the rear frame crossmember. 2nd gen trucks had a bolt on receiver that I easily changed over to the Titan V.

How would I install a Titan V receiver on a '06 dually?
What do you 3rd gen. camper haulers use for hitch extensions?

If you remove bumper, you can remove the hitch. Problem is, the part of hitch welded on either side of where the hitch tube fits into a notch on the end of the frame, also holds up the bumper. If I was going class V, I'd probably sawzall the tube, just inside of each frame rail and call it good.

I did find one hitch that mounts below the factory hitch, but it looks stupid (2 receivers showing), cost about 350$, and has to have reduced strength hanging down so low.

I believe the Reese Titan will fit underneath the factory hitch on the third gen trucks. That leaves you with two hitch receivers, but I've seen one Reese Titan installed that way and it looked fine to me.

Huh? Isn't that tube the rear x member? (nothing else up there)

How would, and which, receiver would bolt up to replace the missing x member?

I can't run a receiver that hangs BELOW the factory receiver- it'd be dragging at every gutter crossing.

You mean "no crossmembers" except the 2 that are above the spare tire. At least on a long bed (can't coment on short bed). A Class V bolted in 6 places to the frame is going to be much stronger than that twisted single tube factory thing anyway. I agree on the stupid hitch below a hitch idea.

the hitch is a crossmember, go look at a 1/2 ton w/o a hitch it will be the same minus the receiver tube. I have a Titan on mine without the crossmember, because it got bent when I got rearended and then installed the titan. I don't have the factory bumper either so I can do with out the crossmember. IMHO I built my own mounts for my new bumper that bolts in place of the crossmember @ the framerails to try to keep from weakening the frame.

Yes, that tube IS an integral part of the frame. You cannot remove it...and just cutting it off as was recommended is a really BAD idea. If you're going to remove it then you have to find some other way of providing that necessary lateral bracing to the frame.

If you're concerned that the Reese Titan would be dragging the ground then your truck must sit MUCH lower than any other Dodge I've ever seen. The one I saw on the 4x4 dually STILL had to use a 4" drop to be able to pull the 16' flatbed trailer he was pulling when I saw him. It would be nowhere near as low as your exhaust tailpipe is...which I doubt ever drags the ground.

I was just reporting on a product that is currently on the market. No need for name calling.

OK, if that is true, then you'll have to cut it out and have a like tube welded between the frame mounts. Not a big deal really. You can do all the pre-work and just drive somewhere to have it welded in place (if you can't weld). That would probably void your frame and suspension warantees though. I wonder if a hitch would fit it you only cut off the rec tube on the bottom of crossmember?? (making it likea 1/2 ton)

OK, so it looks like Titan V has a version that will work with the 3rd gens...

Anybody know if TorkLift has a Superhitch out yet for the 3rd gens??

Well, what I'm refering to as dragging, is the equalizing hitch sitting out on the extension 28 inches to the rear of the bumper, and about 4 1/2- 5 feet to the rear of the rear axle.

Already on my 2nd gen 4x4 with a 'normal' height Titan V receiver mount, it can drag. Just wondering how to get around this problem with a 3rd gen. install...

Now,, can this really be true?

The trailer hitch is an accessory, is it not?

So if your truck has no hitch, no tube below the frame.

It must be just fine, to cut it off.

I just did, and added a class V Rubber Ride Torsion Hitch

Not true. The tube is always there whether you have a receiver hitch or not. If your truck comes with the Class IV hitch then you get a tube with a 2" receiver welded to it. If your truck doesn't come with the hitch then you get a tube with no receiver.

If you're going to cut that tube off then you would be very wise to put SOMETHING back in there to provide lateral bracing to the frame. It's more than just a hitch. It's a brace.

I just put a hidden class V on, and it just bolted to the tube and frame rails, but I didn't have the factory receiver to begin with.

Have you considered using an aftermarket bumper with a built-in class V hitch?
