Cargo Trailer Rental?

Well it looks like my Mom is finally going to move out of the People's Socialist Republic of California and settle somewhere sane. Anyone know of a place between CA and KS or MO that rents large cargo trailers? I'm thinking I'll need something in the 20' range for all of her crap - er - belongings...

OR, does anyone have or know of a trailer of that size that I could pick up (buy) somewhere cheap?

If you find a place let me know. I may (or may not) be moving in the near future and I'd rather rent a large cargo trailer than a Uhaul. Of course, I'm in Texas so what you find may not work for me.

You might buy a new or used cargo trailer, use it, and then sell it. I don't think any places rent large cargo trailers especially 1 way.

Your best bet probably would be to buy one in California, then sell it when you get where you're going (or keep it, cause you know you'll find uses for it).

There's probably not a big market for renting larger trailers due to the liabilities involved when people are bringing their own "tow rigs". When you look at the crap that people try to pull Uhauls with, I'd be really leary of trying to rent out larger trailers. You know you'll have the guy with the S-10 torque monster showing up to pick up a huge enclosed trailer. And even if the guy has the right size truck, it doesn't mean he can pull the trailer with it. You'd have to have tons of restrictions in place to make it work. It might work well locally, but very hard to try and roll that out nationwide and have enough biz to support it.

I went through this issue last year when it was time to help my friend move. I looked just about everywhere for a large cargo trailer to rent, but came up empty handed each time. I had already started to look for a new one to purchase when I finally came across a place that rents them. I rented an 8x24' for a week for $475 (this was last year). I thought it was a better deal than purchasing one. I don't know if it will do you any good though as they are in Des Moines, IA. If you search hard enough though, I am sure you can find a place that rents them, they are out there.
Good luck

Truck junkie,

My 7x16 Carson ran $6250.00 here buy one there or along the way everything in Ca is pricing!! You can save up to $ 2000.00 by buying out of state.

Yeah - you guys are probably right - I've seen nothing in the way of renting a large trailer out here in CA (I'm here already), and the Uhauls just don't cut it. I've been looking around on the internet for a 6x12 or 6x14 that would probably work (I'll need to make two trips - long story) for my Mom's move and then I could use it for my business or sell it later.

And you're right - looking just over in AZ the trailer prices are significantly less.

I bought my enclosed trailer

I went to E-Bay and typed in cargo trailer. There a lot of them forsale that large or larger (some of them are buy now). I bought a 81/2 x 24 that was just 3 months old. The seller bought it to move and took a hit of about $500 when done. I figure to do the same thing. If you are going to go for a large one better to pay a little more and get the 5200 pound axles and torsion bar instead of springs. Drop down rear door is another option that is well worth it when loading up the heavy stuff. I know this is not much help but I went through trying to find a rental or cheep one and those deals are few and far in between

I did manage to find a place in the Dallas area that rents out cargo trailers. That doesn't help you, but it might help someone in the area.

http://www.cargotrailersales.net/rentals.htm

They have an 8'x8'x24' that is $100 per day, $500 per week or $1800 per month. I'm not sure how that compares to getting a large U-Haul truck, but I'd prefer the trailer route.

The thing that is even if you find a place that rents big trailers... if you're making a 1 way move who is going to return it for you If you are coming back, then I guess that is a different story.

When i moved to NJ from AZ my u-haul was only 100 bucks for a week 1-way. Guess nobody wants to come back this way. It was the biggest they had (not very big) see my photos for what it looks like.

Well, if you're moving cross country then renting the cargo trailer probably wouldn't work out. If you're just moving 4 hours away like I might be, then it's not really a big deal to take the trailer down, unload and drive it back. Inconvenient, yes, but not a big deal.
