broke my play purty

I got this little problem. On the way in this afternoon pulling the flatbed trailer. Loaded with the tractor and clang, bang, bam The spring broke on the front axle blows the tire out and the axle shifted all at the same time.
Talk about increasing the pucker factor. After chaining the axle back in place and pulling the wheel I was able to make it in to the house.
But now I have a problem I need to put new axles under it. Does anyone know the correct way to measure the axle so that I get the right length? Do you measure hub to hub or from spring hanger to spring hanger or something in between?

Bigfoot, when I ordered my axles they needed to know spring perch to spring perch as well as hub face to hub face. Hope this helps.

THis is not an answer, but more of a similar situation for your reading enjoyment only.

I was pulling a 32' stock trailer (3 axles), with 8 yearling Charloais bulls in it. As I was topping a hill, the ubolts on the back axle, driver side, broke. THis left the tire rubbing on the fender, and i though it was a blowout with all the smoke. I jacked the trailer up with my 20 ton hyro bottle jack until the leaf springs met the axle. I used a dog chain that was 10' long to tie the axle & spring together. I turned around inthe middle of the road, drove 1 mile back to the sale barn. The dog chain held!! (it looked pretty wimpy, but I guess it gained strenght being wrapped around itlself 100 times...lol).
