IME its the opposite... the extra hp required to turn a torque converter is enough to negate the few lower rpms while cruising.... plus you have a better chance of being in the optimal rpm range with a manual.

Whoops! I worded it backwards! I meant that manuals get better than autos which is why I mentioned it cause I get better mileage than him and mines a manual and his is an auto.
