best way to get around Chicago, IL ?

Looking for suggestions on the "perfect" route. We're going from Rapid City, SD to Buffalo, NY at the end of the month. I've never been to Chicago, but I'd like to avoid the heavy traffic that I've heard of there....also would like to avoid as many toll roads as possible. We'll be on the 90 eastbound leaving SD with the 5er in tow.

Anytime after 2230 or before 0400 is perfect. I have never been stuck in traffic in Chicago, but that is becaue I have never driven there during the day. I don't plan it that way, but it always works out like that.

Unless you plan on taking US 20 across Indiana there is no good way to avoid the toll road. I would advise staying on I-80 well into Ohio, through my backyard, pick up I-480E (this will avoid the downtown Cleveland mess and provide a straighter route), to I-271N, to I-90E, through PA and into NY. You will encounter a couple toll boths the closer you get to Buffalo, but it depends on where you are going.

Have a safe trip! Do the speed limit in Ohio as the state is hurting for $$$.

I'm with smokin, I travel through there quit a bit and barring the normal rush hour traffic times and the occasional semi rolling over in the middle of the highway traffic has never been a big issue.
