homw mad $200. Budget

I have been looking for an Auxiliary fuel tank for quite some time for a budget. The only thing is it had to fit under my heavy duty bead cover. So I finaly got lucky yesterday and went to a local junk yard where I found a Diesel tank for a Dodge 5500 HD. After taking a few mesurements and fitting it in the back of the truck I had 1/4 of an inch of space with the cover down. I stoped by PepBoys and bought the pump, hose, Switch and Wire for the tank. The tank is easly removable. still have to put every thing together. But so far looking good to stay under the budget.

Tank.......................$100
Pump........................$45
12' of 5/8 fuel hose.....$20
Switch.......................$4

That unit, I could get fired up over!
50 gallons, I think you said somewhere?
So it's really a tool tray with fuel underneath? Any dimensions on the tool part?

EDIT - Disregard questions.... found RDS web site!

RDS on northern tool range go from $600+... considering the alternative (unless you scrap one together), i would have to say it is cheap

I don't see the point of having a fuel tank bigger than my blatter.

Gives you more choice as to where and when you stop to fuel up, especially if you are driving cross-country or towing. Fuel prices vary quite a bit across the country. Also, While the bladder can download anywhere with few issues, you may not want to put just any diesel from any place in your truck...

My last 4 trucks have had aux tanks mounted in them. Every one has paid for itself many times over.
My current truck has had fuel supplied on a few different jobs and enabled me to pull my rv over 800 miles a shot on co fuel. This is a huge savings to me especially when fuel hit $1.55Ltr.

I put a 45-gallon aux tank in the bed of my truck about 8 years ago. I plumbed it with an in-the-cab switch, to activate the pump, and I installed a valve so I could change out the pump if needed without losing fuel. I also put a big NAPA fuel filter in the Out line. I also installed an In line, which allows air from the stock tank to enter the aux tank as the main tank fills. I did this so less dirt would enter the system.

Have I saved any money? Absolutely, but I've never kept track. It's probably not quite enough to pay for the tank. But since I use the aux tank a lot, and since the fuel gets filtered twice I think I'm prolonging the life of my injection pump. And it has kept me from running out of fuel a few times--that's worth something. Would I do it again? Yes.

And it's REALLY sweet when I come across I-40 and take on 80 gallons of fuel at Kingman, Ariz. at $2.80 and avoid that $3.25 California diesel.
