Aux fuel tank ????
Aux fuel tank ????
I’m thinking of an auxiliary fuel tank. I found one at Northern Tools. It is an in the bed type, but it has an out the top discharge or fuel pickup line. My problem (or perceived problem) is will it be difficult to get the fuel from the Aux. tank to the main tank. Also does anyone know of any tanks that have a bottom or side drain or discharge so that I can use gravity to fill the main tank?
In general tell me how you have hooked up your aux fuel tank.
Admin. If this is in the wrong place please move, but I know that a lot of RVers and folks that tow are running these tanks so I thought this would be the place to start.
Thanks

I wouldn't buy a top discharge tank when there are bottom discharge tanks from northern tool just as available. Some guys just drill a hole in the bed to run the fuel line from the aux tank valve and tee it into the tanks vent tube. Your 2nd gen may vary....
My auxilliary tank draws from the top of the tank, with a tube that goes to the tank bottom inside the tank.
I plumbed it into a manual valve that is controlled inside the cab, between the seat and door, down on the floorboard.
I actually have three tanks controlled by that valve, two factory installed twenty gallon tanks, and the auxilliary fifty-two gallon tank, for a total of ninety-two gallons.
I would not hook an auxilliary like most do, letting it gravity-feed into the stock tank.
Too many things can go wrong that would let a tank of fuel pour out on the ground.

The way i did mine,,,although its a bottom discharge one,, was i drilled thru the bed floor, I have a electric valve, basically just a valve for dual tanks, , then i welded a fitting into my vent tube that is right beside the stock fuel tank filler and hooked it up with a filter to it. Then when i see i am down to say a 1/4 tank in the main tank , i flip the switch and it fills the tank, with gravity, when full switch it off , no stopping this way at all. The valve was cheap, i am thinking 30.00 and sure beats having to turn it off manually

i run a 110 gallon one so i am good for a long run before i need to stop. I can easily get a few thousand miles when i dont have a trailer on behind me, or about 1,300 with a trailer. The scariest part is putting in 145 gallons at 1 time

YA BUDDY, Got a love them $400+ fillup's
. Ya know it's bad when ya have to swipe the fuel card 4 or 5 times to get filled up, who's idea was it to put them limits on there anyway. I can't imagine what the big rig owner/operator fills like filling up.T398

Bigfoot,
I just got the 60 gal aux tank/toolbox combo. It has a side discharge valve that gravity feeds into the rubber part of the filler tube. VERY EASY to install. I am by no means a mechanic but I did it no problem. It was a little unsettling cutting the hose but take your time , measure it out and you won't have any problems. YOu can get the tank but you also need the Diesel install kit sold seperately. Best thing to do is deal with RDS Aluminum directly it will save you $$$ and they will have the things in stock. I ran into a problem with the install kit being out of stock for over 2 weeks thru Northern Tool. I called RDS (1-850-584-6898) directly and spoke with Ray. He was AWESOME. I told him how Northern tool kept telling me they were in or coming in (They first sent me the wrong kit) and then they tell me they are on backorder again. I was leaving for New York on a camping trip on that Friday (Talked to Ray on Tuesday) he at first told me he would give me a discount for my troubles then changed it and sent me the part I needed at NO CHARGE!!! All I had to pay was the 2 day Air so I got it , installed it and had it ready for Friday. I would suggest you contact them directly and ask for RAY!!!!!
Hope this helps.
P.S.
The Diesel install kit was $10 cheaper from them...Cutout the middleman and save $$$$ Not sure about the tank, wish I would have checked that too, but I bet you save some $$$ for sure. Let me know how you make out.

Yes sir.
My valve changes the tank that the engine is drawing from.
A second valve selects which tank the return line feeds.
I can draw from one tank and return to another, if I so desire.
I gave up on electric valves, after I had three different ones run me out of fuel in bad places.
The manual valves mount through the floor, with the handle inside the cab, and all the plumbing underneath.
It is really a lot simpler than it sounds.
Just hose clamps and rubber lines, anyone could do it.

Also, where are you guys getting those things that you just swipe to get fuel.
Dumb old me thought that I had to pay cash.
Of course, they always knock off from six to ten cents a gallon at the fuel desk, when paying cash; but, it would be so much cheaper to just swipe something at the pump and not get my billfold out.
Thanks.
