That's what I did also. I also pull a trailer behind my camper, so I need to be able to use the hitch plug for it.

I checked continuity from the hitch plug to the wires in the harness by the fuel tank so I got the right ones when I tapped in.

I didn't want to find out later that I tapped into the wires coming from the light switch instead of the trailer harness.

For a TC or trailer, you will need a heavy wire for pwr/grnd
The 9 way plug a mentioned has BIG terminals for same.
Next rewire I do will be done this way,
Presently I have a seperate Plug for +/- connections.
May want to use 4way from rear plug for lights and wire
+/_ from under hood, you will need a relay.

My dodge has a low power circuit for 12 volts, wire not big enough for camper application.

This is a bit of a tangent but... I just put a new sealed 7 way wiring harnes on my trailer and as it was hanging down, when I took a wide turn, it wrapped around my tractor turn signal lamp and broke the new wire.

This is partly due to my design and I should've seen it coming

Is there something I can get sort of like what they have on tractors where the plug would hook up to a spring or bungee or something so that it would only be longer when needed otherwise i'd be coiled up high where it can't catch on anything?

Fly'n J, Loves or any semi tractor repair shop will have what you are asking about. It's called a pogo stick. I cant remember the cost, they come in quite a few different styles so try to find one that works for you.

Go to a RV Supply store and buy a 6ft pigtail with the seven way on one end.
Buy the bed connector. Make the hole were you want it. Run the bare end from the pigtail up to the hole and wire the bed plug. Secure it to the underside of the truck and your done.

Mine has been there for almost 5 years now. It stays plugged in all the time unless I'm pulling the boat or another trailer.

See my photo album and there is a picture of the pigtail plugged in to the truck. The other end just goes up to the bed plug.

Dave

Mine is the exact same way and like the peace of mind it give me not having any bare wire to worry about rotting away.

Thumbs up

From what I have read I think this would pretty much end the hassles of splicing into the wiring harness. And on the 2006 you want to be REAL CAREFUL about splicing into any oem harness!

In my 01, there is 8 wires coming from the front to the plug. Two of these wires (black) are connected to the ground post on the plug. When connecting the bed plug, I spliced into both of these with the ground wire from the plug and all works great.

I installed this 2 days ago. Very high quality wiring and plug box.

Hardest part was using the hole saw on my $50K vehicle, but it looks stock and works like a charm. I'd pay $60 any day to not have to splice the factory wiring.
