3.73 or 4.10?
4.10 and love it!
My '05 3500 CTD 6sp srw has 4.10 and it is great. I tow a 34' 5'er and don't like to get in binds. This transmission/rear end combination is strong. I can accellerate going up in in sixth with under load. I get 17 mpg in town unloaded and 14 loaded. It will run 105 mph in 16 seconds from a standing stop and is all stock! If you want a strong durable fast truck get the 4.10.

My fiver weighs about 8000lbs wet. If I was towing 12000, I would definately go with the 410s, and for sure the 3500. I went up from 6500 to 8000lbs with the same truck, and definately notice a difference on the big hills, and my temp guage never used to go over "1/2", but does now. I definately have plenty of power for the trailer, but towing 12000 lbs I would want more power. If your getting a new truck, get one your going to be happy with when towing!

I agree with Casey here (drat it, hate to agree with him on anything
). If you are towing heavy, go six speed, and I would consider anything over 12K to be heavy. However, the new six speed has a lower geared 6th gear. So, if you are talking an 06 with six speed, stick with the 3.73. In fact, I heard you could not get a 4.10 with the six speed. If I were getting an auto, I would go with the 4.10 - - sorry, just the opposite of some other opinions - - but that is what this is - - opinions.

I agree with FiverBob & Casey, I swapped my 3.55 for 4.11 and have been happier. Truthfully, if I knew then what I know now I wouldn't be a doin it inna pickup. Be safe, point is to get there, not get there first.

I know a guy who has a truckbed camper and tows a fiberglass trailer with his Gold Wing in it. Needless to say a lot of weight. He had a hard time with swaying and had to put air bags and a heavier suspension to help him out. He installed a chip and had the pump turned up by cummings. Now he rebuilds his tranny every 18months.
My 03 3500 4x4 DRW auto has 4.10s and if I had it to do again I'd get 3.73s. The 4.10s are costing me an average of 2 mpg over a friend's identical truck wtih 3.73s. And since I get 11 around town and 15-16 on the highway, that's pretty big.

I just noticed yesterday my overhead (which is always within a tenth or so of handcalc) was reading 17.4 - - and that is town with short (3 miles) hops on the interstate. I get a solid 20 if I don't exceed 70 on the highway. I get about 22 - 23 at 60ish. This all with 4.10.
