2004.5 auto towing

looking for any feedback... have 2004.5 cummins with auto... then towoing medium loads, it seems by using the "towing mode" or button in, sees to result in excessive high revs on freeway.... also does the tranny lock up differently > why use the tow mode other than to keep the down shifts from happening to frequently... when should one use the button ?

The tow mode is just an OD on/off switch. Putting it on tow will send revs higher. Depending on your load, when pulling big hills, if you sense the engine is lugging, hit the switch and turn OD off. Otherwise just leave it on and cruise happy

If you set the cruz at around 65 and let run, it will run and run sweet
If yo notice that it is having problems keeping in gear then you hit the tow/haul (OD On/Off) button so it will down shift, unlock OD, and then upshift. As long as it it isn't hunting for a gear then it's doing it's thing, also as long as you aren't lugging it down

im assuming hitting the OD On/Off button at any time will not hurt the tranny? if im pulling a hill at 65 but it starts to lug down, i can hit the OD on/off button no problems?? so for the stupid question...

When you're towing up a hill the tranny should downshift on it's own when the motor starts to lug. The problem is that with a large load the tranny will tend to downshift out of OD annoyingly often. The OD lockout switch is there to keep it out of OD and prevent this.

You shouldn't hurt anything pushing the switch at any time. As a rule it's good to lock out OD when driving hilly roads.

I use to take it out of cruz then push the button when it started to lug, but it works better to leave it in cruz and push out of OD not the lag and shifts better.
Try it.
