So they are going to give these away right as we are coming into hurricane season?

Don't worry , there are still thousands more sitting in fields in Texas and Arkansas and I know there are thousands more stored in Cumberland , MD. They are useless because they need water and sewer hookups that aren't available where they are needed and regulations prohibit them from being placed in a flood plain . Remember the diesel fuel shortage after Katrina ? How much fuel do you think it took to run thousands of these trailers south from Indiana 1 at a time not to mention loads of ice that went south then back to Maine to be put in cold storage ?

Makes me wonder why FEMA just doesn't keep the trailers. That way they would be ready for the next disaster. There is plenty of places that they could keep them. For instance one of the bases that the goverment has shut down.

A friend of mine purchased two of the FEMA trailers that were for sale. He bought the first one, then found a second one he liked better so he ended up with two. One in Alabama, one in Florida. And he dont have a truck to pull them. So I went (from Tennessee) and picked up both of them. When I was in Alabama there were trailers as far as you could see in a field. I asked how many, 9000 total. 5000 new one's waiting on the next disaster and 4000 more to sell. Didnt make sense to me.

Unhappy

I work at a hospital, thru fed and state surplus about $1300, but it is with the fact, feds put a lein on the title, it must stay at the hospital location and be used for the specified use (office space, living quarters or what ever), maintained up to it current conditions. During this time the feds or state can and will come inspect and confirm the condition and use of property. Also during this 18-24 month period they can recall said item not refunding any money, and can take back the trailer at the end of the 24 month period or release them.
Now this may not be how everyone else is buying these trailers, but the trailers offered to the hospital had these rules applied to them.

I got this information from the Ft. Worth surplus director. I wanted one badddd but no holding tanks and they could come get them without refunding money, I had to pass.

They are selling anywhere from 5k to 15k based on what you want. Something without a slide you can get for 5k and sometimes less. The two we picked up were 32 and 35 ft with one and two slides. They were between 10 and 15k.

The one's that the public bid on come without any stipulations. Once you buy them they are yours. You take them back to your state, pay taxes on them and do whatever with them. Live in them, sell them, it dont matter.

The ones that they're auctioning off here (Hope AR) they are selling in lots. Be careful. We went out a couple of weeks ago to check them out and the ones that they were selling that week were trashed. Windows knocked out, holes in the roof, sides..you name it, they were pieces of junk. I talked to a man that got one and paid $19K with no slides ; you can get a new one for that with a warranty. Just be careful if you bid and look at the pics real good. His was in very good shape but it did seem high to me. Remember this is like EBAY..it's a bidding process.

When FEMA first started shipping trailers the manufacturers couldn't produce them fast enough so FEMA bought quite a few off dealer lots . That's why you can find some with sliders . Be careful buying regular FEMA trailers . They aren't insulated well and don't have holding tanks . The only inspection on delivery was a quick check for exterior damage . Expect to find defects due to shoddy workmanship .

WHAT??!! Shoddy workmanship on a government contract job??!! Say it ain't so! Rick makes a good point - if I were in the market for one of these I'd sure look hard for those odd fully-featured ones - they will sell the same way as the skimpy poor ones, no?

Exactly as mentioned above, the govt made a big purchase order. They bought several thousand that were sitting on the lots at the trailer dealers. The others were spec trailers that at most would be good for a hunting camper. Or something to use when you go ride ATV's and dont care about getting it muddy when you get back. If you look close, you can find some really nice trailers and get them at a pretty good price. Sierra and Salem trailers fully loaded. Just gotta read and look real close. The two we went and got were really pretty nice.

I towed many FEMA trailers to storage lots in the winter of '04-'05 . We pulled a lot through snow in IN and WV . They were coated with snow and salt when parked . They were never washed . When I delivered regular RV's to dealers an unbelievable amount of defects were written up . I can just imagine problems with FEMA trailers .

they showed all them on CNN and most of the ppl that lived in them trashed them because they were mad the government didnt help them as fast as they could or whatever they were made about. it was a joke how tore up some of those trailers were. some of them were burnt up inside and the cabinets were gone etc.
