Talking Third Gen Brakes for 2001.5 and 2002 Trucks

First Thanks to Slowflyer2112 for all the leg work on getting this started!!

I just finished installing 3rd Gen Brakes on my 2001.5 Truck and they work Great!!! I got most of the parts from NAPA and the front dust shields from Mopar. The rears took some time to figure out I ended up using rear calipers from a 1 ton dually truck. So here is all the part number I used.

Front Dust Shield Mopar # 5086663AA
Front Dust Shield Mopar # 5086664AA
Front Rotors NAPA # NB 48880143
Rear Rotors NAPA # NB 48880139
Right Front Caliper NAPA # SDC 2423173
Left Front Caliper NAPA # SDC 2423172
Right Rear Caliper NAPA # SDC 2423175
Left Rear Caliper NAPA # SDC 2423174
Front Brake Pads NAPA # UP AE7864M
Rear Brake Pads NAPA # UP AE7752M

I also ordered rear dust shields and parking brake assemblies but they measured the same as what was on my truck so I took them back.

I tried rear calipers from a single wheel application but the bracket didn't fit.

I replaced all my calipers due to some of my calipers had rust in the piston bores, if my calipers were good I could have just got the caliper brakets from Mopar and used the original calipers.

So was your truck orginally a drum brake set up? (I thought 2001.5-2002 was disc on the rear). Mine is a 2001 with drum and I just replaced the drums and shoes last week end, But I'd still be very interested in switching to disc

Are the rear brakes much bigger from 2nd gen to 3rd gen? Is there a seat of the pants noticable improvement in braking? What difference, if any, is there in pedal feel?

Disk Brakes

My Truck came with the disk brakes all around. Original size of a 2nd gen rear rotor messure out at 12.73 inches, on a 3rd gen they messure out at 13.855 inches. That adds 1 1/8th inch sizes to the rear brake rotors over the 2nd gen. 2nd and 3rd gens use the same brake pads on the rear, only the caliper mounts were different on my truck.

Hope this helps!
Brent

I own a shop and get jobber from NAPA and Mopar. My total cost was 661.29 plus brake fluid and tax. It would be cheeper if I only had to get the caliper brackets from Mopar and use my original calipers.

I suppose you would also have to figure the cost of larger wheels into the project, as the factory 16s won't fit. That'll add thousands to the total.

Good point, I had thought of that, but should have mentioned it. I have a set of 17" wheels already though. Others will need to take that into the equation though.

I already had the 19.5 so I forgot about that. Sorry but if some one has that size of rim and need brakes it is worth the upgrade I feel.

To upgrade the front to 3rd gen brakes all you should need is Larger rims 17" or bigger, brake pads, caliper brackets, brake rotors, dust sheilds if you want them. Our calipers match up and would not need to be replaced unless you want to. I replaced mine due to rust in the piston bores. I used a 2005 2500 4x4 for the front part numbers, and a 2005 3500 4x4 with dual wheel for the rears.

Hope this help, Brent

You could get a set of 3rd Gen take-offs for cheap until you can find/afford the 17" and up aftermarket wheels/tires you want.

Update on the bigger brakes!

I have had the 3rd Gen Brakes on for more than 3 weeks and they are better now than when I first put them on (due to wear in.) I have to apply less pedal pressure to stop like I did before the upgrade. I even increased my electric brake controller to match the brakes with the truck. I feel that this was a great upgrade and my friends and wife can all the difference when they drive or just ride in my truck.
