Search Speed Limit?

Why is there a speed limit for searching? Or why is it set at 30 seconds? If I'm looking for something, and I have no results, I have to wait 30 seconds to try again. I understand why you would want a posting speed limit, but for searching?

Maybe reducing it down to 10 seconds would be better.

I'm pretty sure that's to keep hackers from attacking the site and overloading the servers with search requests to bring DTR down.

Thats correct, it keeps the server from being over run with search requests.

Ok, makes sense, but 30 seconds? If a hacker is using a spam bot or something automated like that, 10-15 seconds would prevent it to. But then again, a bot wouldn't care if it didn't receive any content, it would just keep searching. Now, a spam bot programmed to fill threads by posting would be a different matter.

Well, for $10k, I guess I could wait 30 seconds between searches...

Lary,

What do you think about starting a donation drive for the site improvement fund? With so many thousands of active members, $1 from each one would go a long way towards new IT. When a purchase is made from the DTR store, there could be a donation option, much like the campaign donation option we get on our 1040s.

You guys are so nice and helpful on the phone, I bet most members who buy something would be happy to make a contribution to DTR...

Though I don't know of an efficient way to receive $1 each from well over 30K members, I'd wager most would gladly donate such a token amount.

I try to donate $25 every other month... someone had mentioned a DTR lottery, 5 bucks a 'ticket', drawing every month, winner gets the pot, minus 5-10% that goes to the DTR. ?????

There is a donation place in the DTR store for just such a purpose

First I want to say that I LOVE THIS SITE. Second, I offer up my free time to help with the forums or any other aspect of the web site. I work in computers all day long, and am willing to do whatever needs to be done. I can help come up with a resolution to the 30 second search speed limit. I know I haven't been a member long but I will do what I can. Thanks.
