search question

I know that this has come up before, but could not find it in the search.
Many times I want to use a 2 or 3 letter term in search and cannot do it.
Today it was "55" because that is the number cast in my block.
Other times it has been IP or LP when looking for injection and lift pump info.
Why is it that a short term cannot be used in search? Is this a function which
can be changed by the administrator? There are a lot of these terms in the
subject/body of posts and it would help to be able to locate them.
Thanks...gary

There are two search methods that can be used.
1) The which has word limits to minimize the impact on the database.
and
2) The Google Search bar found at the bottom of each page. This has no limits and will produce search results for as little as one character.

You can also add a wildcard to the 2 or 3 word searh
I.E. 55* KDP* 53*, etc.

Why are there limits on the search feature??

Does it really kill the DB speed that much??

The limits are imposed on the because of hardware constraints.
Were pushing the current hardware to the limits and the search feature can often push just a little too far causing slowness issues with the site.

You can help reduce this by making a donation (See link at the top of each page).

So does that donation get me unlimited search access?

Cause IF your at your HARDWARE limits, then how is that donation going to help the situation. Hardware upgrades are not instant.

I belong to 5 other boards from cavi to jeep and none of them charge for searching. TDR and DTR are the ONLY boards I have came across that charge for searching or posting.

Kinda hard to support that when everyone else manages to give it away.

I'd rather support a board that is useful and that I might fear it disappearing. When a board is useful and I feel like I can't live without it being there, $$$ fly to the rescue. But at the moment, the diesel truck sites are charging flat fees for INFOMATION.

I was searching for tire sizes on DRWs. Called Discount tire and belle tire. Was easier than waiting for search permissions and didn't cost a dime for the call.

Not trying to rag on this thread. But honestly trying to understand why the diesel sites think they are so much higher up as to charge for searching or posting (TDR). Most boards are up for the enjoyment of the sport and to make new friends as they share ideas. They are NOT for profit/donation.

Anywho. Not that I am leaving this board. Just my opinion about this issue. You have a great board. Would like to see it more useful though. And maybe then you would see more $$$ coming your way. :thumb:

I see that your only posts have been a FOR SALE item that was removed from the forum (For sale stuff goes in the classifieds) and then your complaints here. Pretty easy to see where you get your motivation

Yeah I did my stuff over at TDR as a paid member until I dicovered most boards were not pay at all.

I posted a mistake and tried to delete it. Post wouldn't delete. I think I even notified the mod myself about it, requesting a delete.

Mostly I view the site without loggin in.

As for having a pumped truck...Got that. Dual boxes stacked. AFE. Free flow exhaust etc.

Needed a little tire info and logged in for the search and discovered I couldn't. Posted here for info as to why.

Basically...got bored with it and called tire shops.

My loyality is to the board I mod for the most part. Of which, I have donated thousands of hours and nearly equal in money. My motivation is to help those in need not pay those trying to control the environment or the flow of information.

Hope that helps.

Perhaps we've had a misunderstanding.
The donation I was referring to will help us purchase new hardware.
It is the power of the new hardware that will allow the search to function once again without limits.
New hardware is not cheap. As this is a free site, there is little budget available for capital items. Thus, we must turn to the good folks that make up our membership for support.

No, they are not instant, but you have to start somewhere. We know this, and so do our members. We don't demand a donation, we ask for one from our users who find our site useful. they have the freedom to support it or not.

I belong to 5 other boards from cavi to jeep and none of them charge for searching.
WHAT are you talking about? We don't charge for searching either. You lost me on this one.

TDR and DTR are the ONLY boards I have came across that charge for searching or posting.
We charge for neither. Again, your statement is inaccurate.

Kinda hard to support that when everyone else manages to give it away.
Our site is free, and has been this way since day one.

I'd rather support a board that is useful and that I might fear it disappearing. When a board is useful and I feel like I can't live without it being there, $$$ fly to the rescue. But at the moment, the diesel truck sites are charging flat fees for INFOMATION.
I'm not sure what infomation is, but again, you're incorrect. TDR charges, and that is their perogative, but we do not. We never have. we rely on our users to support us because quite honestly, I have little money to put into it anymore after I've spent so many thousands of dollars over the years. That is why we have donations, and an online store. That helps us keep things going. We do not charge our users a cent to use this site.

I was searching for tire sizes on DRWs. Called Discount tire and belle tire. Was easier than waiting for search permissions and didn't cost a dime for the call.
Well, great, then do it some more. The only time you have to wait for searching is when the system is over a certain load. Once the load comes back down, you can search again. We also have a google search link on the bottom of the page that our users can take advantage of.

Not trying to rag on this thread.
Yes you are, and you have been successful in doing so. Congratulations.

But honestly trying to understand why the diesel sites think they are so much higher up as to charge for searching or posting (TDR). Most boards are up for the enjoyment of the sport and to make new friends as they share ideas. They are NOT for profit/donation.
Says who? They are for whatever the owner deems them to be. That is the beauty of America. I'm sorry, but you don't mandate how we run our site, and we won't mandate how you run your life. Suggestions are great, and we listen to a great many of them, and implement many of them as well. I just can't believe the arrogance here, and to think, you have been so inaccurate in much of what you said. I told someone not so long ago in another thread, research is a wonderful thing.

Anywho. Not that I am leaving this board. Just my opinion about this issue. You have a great board. Would like to see it more useful though. And maybe then you would see more $$$ coming your way. :thumb:
Then help us make it more useful instead of sitting back and doing nothing. There's nothing I dislike more than people who complain, and then do nothing to change it.

We try to control neither. I don't know where your comments are coming from, but it's quite amazing really.
