I find that sometimes it works, and on other occasions, it's disabled.

The search function has to be disabled during severe load times so that everything doesn't come crashing down More info here ;

Thats cool, but why was it disabled for hours last night when there were 30 some users online? Was the database re-indexing ..?

I turned it off completely last night, and then left it off until this morning when I woke up. The site had 800 and something users on when I shut it down, and I didn't feel like staying up until 2am to turn it back on.

Had a bit of caffein bump into a sleepin brain cell Jack, why not cut the search feature first to non-members during times of high usage? sheesh right now there are 250 registered users on and more non registered. This way the folks that took the time to register and therefore care abit more for the site and are not just lurking will have the feature, and if the lurkers want they can register and view as we do.
Any way a member can help with the hosting? Say if one of us was to get a quad xeon server ? I realize that having a servr and keeping it maintained are two different things but some of the quad xeon piii 700 boxes are going for real good prices....

I agree with mikmaze on the disabling the search to non members in heavy load times. What bothers me is sometimes after doing the search for new posts, I start reading them. When I am done with say, page 2 of 4, and I try to go to page 3 of 4, it tells me the search has been disabled.

Sorry guys, it is what it is right now. I can't keep pouring cash out of my pockets. The search function has been disabled for non-members since 12/03. This is member searches only. Once we have the cash in the donations to do it, then the new machine will be a huge help. Until then, we just have to live with it the way it is. I'm sorry, but this is all I can do at this point. Hosting isn't the issue. I was in charge of operations for a large hosting company already, so that is covered. This is purely hardware and forum software updates that will help this. Both of which cost money.

How about donating heavy duty hardware? Will that help? Some of us have access to such stuff real cheap .. 7 disk U160 drive arrays with controllers? Memory? Would anything besides cash be of help?

What are we running on right now?

What I need is a dual processor 3.0 ghz with 2+GB Ram. Dell 2850 would be most appropriate. They're about 5-7k.
