so the national chapters arent important to dtr? i could see making them quit counting but deleting half of my posts feels like a slap in the face! im not trying to start anything...i will still visit the site about 4 hours a day and i will still love dtr! but why drop me back down to 400 posts???

Your post count shouldn't even mean anything to you. Who cares how much someone has posted, that isn't the point of this site. Post counts should not mean anything, and folks shouldn't pay any attention to them.

Jack, I know it would be easy to edit the postbit templates to just yank 'em out. How about it?

 

We didn't delete your posts. Everything you've ever posted is still there. What we did is change things so posts in certain forums don't count in your post count. The reason for this is because post counts have been known to tempt people into posting things that are irrelevent or somewhat useless in order to get your post count higher. This change will hopefully deter that. If not, then I'll get rid of them altogether. Why do I do this?

1. Having irrelevent posts makes it harder to find and search for real information related to trucks.

2. It causes the database to grow unreasonably, which in turn costs me money and time in order to have the proper equipment to handle the additional load. That in turns costs me more money once again.

3. I'm sick of seeing people having post count contests because...well... see number 2

4. Not having a post count eliminates this issue altogether and causes people to post more on topic. I know this because I have done it before. Guess what? The post count discussion and the post count threads were gone completely and it helped keep the content on the site relevent.

I'm not sure why you would consider it a slap in the face, but to each his own.

i think to help cut down on irrelevent posts there should be some way to fget rid of threads have been discussed before.....theres so many threads on ehre that are the same thing........we should make the search tab 10x bigger!!!lol

 

In my opinion, a person asking a question about their truck is not irrelevent. Regardless of how many times the question has been asked, there is always someone new coming into this realm who will have questions. Many people do searches, and can't find what they're looking for. Sometimes, it's because they didn't search correctly, and sometimes it's because there might not be information available on a particular subject. Either way, I welcome all questions on this site, no matter how many times it may have been asked before. Don't forget that you were all new here at one point as well. I would much rather see a post asking a truck question then one talking about post counts.

 

The only reason I started this was to make sure I didnt slip up without realizing it and somehow get my account locked down...not to question my actual post count, as I could care less if I had 10 or 10000. Im on here to get and give answers, not to get my name known.

Jack, I think Tom has a good point - if you'd eliminate the post counts, there wouldn't be as much of a temptation to judge a book by it's cover (or a newbie by post count) - after all, post quality is far more important than post quantity.

on the other hand, people might give more weight to a response from a member with 12k posts, than the weight from a response of a relative noob. not that the noob couldn't be correct, but it seems more like the voice of experience would get teh most respect.

 

A high post count does not denote smart response, nor does it denote the person is an expert. The only thing a high post count states is the person posts a lot.

 

Based on what I've seen from running this site for almost 7 years now, I have to agree with your statement. I have never found a correlation between post count and expertise, with one exception. Infidel
