Lookin for new tires. Dog gone 16.5" rims!
Lookin for new tires. Dog gone 16.5" rims!
Just wondering what size, brand, and model tires yall guys with 16.5" rims are getting.
Right now my tires are mismatched. I got 33x12.50x16.5 Remington Mud Brutes up front, and 36x14.50x16.5 Mickey Thompson Baja Belted's on the rear. Was going to get a 2inch coil spacer so I could run 35's all around, but the power decrease from going from 33x12.50's to 36x14.50's in the rear was huge, so I'll probably just stick with 33x12.50's.
I do pipeline construction, so I'm always on job sites that have tons of rocks, and copious amounts of mud when it rains, so I either need a killer all-terrain, or a decent mud-terrain.
My only issue is, I don't really wanna pay over $200 a tire
So, yall got any ideas for me?

Buy a new set of take off rims/tires in either 16" or 17" rim size. Then either run the tires that are on it, or sell them if they're in good shape and put the $ towards new mudders.
Even doing this, you should be able to get into a more popular rim size and some decent tires for the <$800 you want to spend.
Choices are just too limited in 16.5's any more.

When I had my old 3/4 ton Chevy I had 16.5's and I put a set of Trail Cutter 35-12.5-16.5's on it. They were very reasonably and they wore like iron. I don't know exactly what make they were but for some reason JTL sticks in my mind. Just check at your local tire shop and ask for Trail Cutter A/T's.
Hope this is a help.

Well, I bought a set of 33x12.50x16.50 BFG All-Terrains today. $164 per tire, road hazard warranty for $24 a tire, and for mount and balance for $8.75 per. Totaled out to $848 and some change.
I'm happy with em. Though it's really weird not hearing that hum that drowns out the sound from the engine.
Just hoping they'll at lease be comparable to moderatly bald set of Remington Mud Brutes I had on there before...
What's yalls experience with BFG AT's in the mud and whatnot?

You got a Pep Boys near you? The Pep Boys around here can still get 33x12.50x16.50 store brand mudders. They are called Dakota M/Ts here but may be a different brand name where you are. No they are not the best tire ever made by a long shot, but they are decent and they are about $100.00/tire.
I've been running some Tempra Trail Cutter M/T's in 33x12.5x16.5 for about a year on my beater truck. They work good, no complaints, haven't been stuck yet with them. They cost me $160 each I believe.
I wouldn't run the BFG A/T's if my main goal was mud. They will not self-clean like a mud tire. I had them on a truck a decade ago and found about the only thing they are really good at is highway and sand.

Yeah I found out they don't like to let go of rocks till you hit about 70, then they fly out like missiles. Have done well on the rocks, and moderate mud so far. My only complaint is the holdin onto small rocks deal.

You could get either the BFG Mud Terrains, Pro Comp A/T, Pro Comp M/T, Interco TrXus M/T, Interco TSL SX, or the Interco TSL. I wouldn't get a Pep Boys special, the tread rating isn't that high, well at least for reg. car radials, they're about have about a 200-210 rating unless they've changed since then.
Those mud brutes were on this truck when I bought it. Had no idea of even where to look for em.
Shoot, if they're cheap, maybe I'll just buy some pos 8lug rims and mount em, and switch off every now and then...
