Wrong turbo ?

Hey guys i put a engineered diesel 62/68/13ss on my truck this past weekend and i really dont like the way it drives at all. I thought i had done all my research and was picking the best turbo for me, but this turbo seems slow to spool and i cant even drive the truck without smoking out the highway. Also my egt's are kinda high to me i run 900 to 950 on flat ground with the cruz set on 70mph, no load on the truck and its about 70 degrees outside. I am worried because its not even the hot months down here in south texas and i dont even have anything behind the truck yet. Truck seems to run good wot and egt's are manageable then but i explained to chris at ED that this is a daily driver/ tow rig and he seemed confident that this was the turbo for me. Any input on that path to take now or turbo suggestions welcome.

Give it some miles before you do anything hasty. To me, new turbos take a while to loosen up and perform better after about 500 miles or so. At least that was the case when I jumped to a larger single.

You say you're smoking out the highway, give some detailed info on what's going on with boost pressure.

It's not much different from my little Cat. Like Mike D. sez, when it loosenes up, it'll improve. It also likes to get hit with lots of initial fueling.

What turbo was on your truck before the switch to the ED 62/68/13ss?

What RPM does it start to make boost at? What RPM does it spool (take off) at?

I'm looking at getting one but still on the fence. TIA

A 68 shouldn't be slow to spool, something doesn't sound right. Also don't let the cruising temps be an indicator of the ability to take higher end fuel. When you get a bigger turbine and housing, the turbo will be flowing better, but not boosting as much at road speed low load. But the gain will be with the higher power levels. The stock HX was great for keeping cruising temps low, but choked up high. Now you have the opposite.

That would have been a turbo for me. The S300 I have is probably smaller on the turbine side and spools quick, but can't flow enough at full RPM/Fuel.

Like stated before my exhaust temp runs hotter empty than it does towing.. A little bit more fuel would not hurt at all if you wanted to add some more power.. Might actually cool it down!

Are you still running the stock exhaust pipe?

i have no experience with the vp trucks so my imput is strictly for experimentation. try running minimal fueling with the edge and see what the charateristics of the turbo behave like. then add more and more and see if there is a happy level for that turbo to light.
i can light my 66/14 with stock fueling...some lag...and then i play with my fueling parameters for the best combo when i'm ready for compitition. obviously my cr is different but the philosophy my help for your situation.
good luck

Give it a few miles ,but remember a larger turbo will run warmer at part throttle
and cooler at WOT

Might want to check for some boost leaks. While crusing temps will go up, 900-950 seems high. Whats your boost on the highway?

To answer some of yall questions, I had the stock charger prior to getting this one and expected it to be slower to spool but i didnt expect this much. And no i have 4in exhaust all the was with a straight. The turbo seems to start making boost at about 1700rpm and really starts pushing about 2300 i have only seen about 35lbs of boost out of it.
