Why not supercharge

Hey all not being a diesel expret and please excuse me if this is a dumb question but why not supercharge our diesels to eliminate turbo lag and just increase pressure as our mods increase? Or run both the supercharger to get it off the line with no turbo lag then let the turbo take over and make the big psi? Just a curious question.

Jamie

Re:Why not supercharge

I remember seeing that on another web site a couple months ago. Someone did have a supercharger and a turbo and if I recall correctly was making 20# boost at idle and over 100# total. I think it would involve some interesting plumbing, to get it all to work at the correct pressures.

20psi @ idle? That's a lot of boost at idle. Wouldn't that cause some driveability issues? 100psi total I can see, but 20 at idle just seems messed up. As much as I love the sound of a blower/turbo, that would just get annoying after a while. How do you drive that thing? What would that kind of boost at idle do to your driveling? How bout the gas mileage?

The old Dietroit diesels had the super/turbo combe. It sounded cinda sweet. They still did not have that much power. well I only drove a Bull dozer with one in it.

Re:Why not supercharge

Think of 20 psi as INSTANT 200 HP at the pedal.
You would probably have to alter your driving habits a bit but I think it has merit.
I would waste the charger at a lower psi and use it to eliminate all lag and smoke.

I do know that running at 12 psi was pretty harsh on the driveline in 4x4 trying to make all six spin...well, thats what they wanted to do anyway. ;D

But what do I know. :P

I would think that wastegating it would be an ok idea, but you still have the drive belt of the huffer robbing precious engine power. Why not put a clutch drive similar to that off an ac compressor, have a set switch at a certain psi turn the huffer off.

That was you looking in the shop wasn't it ?!
Dang spies. I thought it was a lost sheep.
Reminds me of the wolf in sheeps clothing story.

Re:Why not supercharge

Detroit diesels with blowers are called scavenger engines and will not run without a blower (no vacuum at idle). Two stroke engines are a different concept all together and Detroit had their problems also with that set up including head gaskets. The 475HP Silver 92's needed a clutch on the blower so the turbo could over run the blower to use the available manifold pressure with out back pressuring the intake cavity. The peak manifold on mine with 98-12 hole injectors was 45-58psi/rw542HP/1900ftpdsTorque@2300rpm+, down side was head gaskets/O rings would blow and crappy fuel milage 2.6 mpg, broken U joints, fragged clutches, cooked drive tires, and cooling problems. If you only drive stuff like this on Sunday its okay but too many pieces to fly apart for everyday work vehicle. PK

Re:Why not supercharge

The one truck I have heard of that has both a supercharger and a H2E, and he runs 11psi at idle.

Re:Why not supercharge

Hey Guys,
Cummins did put a supercharger on some of their engines. I was working at a hospital in Chattonooga, Tn., and they had a stand by generator in the room. The guys saw me eye balling it and after they saw my truck, they told me that if their motor was missing after I left, I was dead. It was about the size of mine, 6 banger and all, so I figured a swap would be easy, not fast, but easy. They told me it purred like a kitten and could not be bogged under any load, even overloaded.
Any takers on helping "borrow" a super charged Cummins? LOL

Re:Why not supercharge

I know some people working with electric superchargers which are aiding boost in the lower rpms only by helping get the turbo spooled up early.
