What is the diff between a "true" 215HP pump and one that has been "built"?

Calling around pricing out pumps and talking to a few different shops. I have a '97 5spd, so it has the 215HP pump.
What is the difference between an actual 215 pump, and just buying a pump that has been 'internally modified' and rated to ~300HP? I asked (Pensacola Diesel) if it was just a cam plate and they said there are some internal mods.
Whenever I mention 215 pump, their eyes light up like dollar signs it seems.

I can buy this pump which he said is rated at ~300 HP. I'm guessing it doesn't "start" out as a 215 pump though? For an extra $300 core I can keep my 215 pump.
Am I better off just buying that 'whatever' pump rated at 300HP, or sending off MY true 215 to have rebuilt?
I'm not understanding.
Piers says core on a 215 is $1200-$1500. If I can keep it for $300 then I **** sure will.

From my limited knowledge, the 215 pumps are hard to come by. Contact member John_P he has a lot of experience with the 12 valve pumps.
Scheid diesel is one of the top performance pump builders, you might give them a call to request information as well. While I was up there I got a tour of their Terra Haute pump shop, very nice shop with Bosch test stands.

Chris, I need an actual replacement pump, the governor is hosed on my pump (gov lever arm adjustment stud backed out and fell into the pump). If my pump was in good running shape I'd just do some mods to it, but it's a hurtin. I was thinking about just getting the governor side fixed, but that's going to be ~$400-$500+ I'm told, so with 300K miles, I might as well get one that's completely rebuilt.
I see what you're saying, I'm just looking at it from the perspective of "I'll still have a 300K mile pump" at the end. I've already got the #10 plate. If I try to get the governor fixed, there's no guarantee that's the problem 100%, and no guarantee the rest of the pump hasn't been effected at all either...? Or maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way?
I guess I'm saying I'd prefer to take that $500, add another $500, have a completely reman'd pump that I know is good, plus I'll still have my true 215 pump to hold onto should I decide to do something else with it...

I called up the a local diesel injection shop explaining what I had done (had to adjust the governor lever arm). He told me "Who gave you that bright idea?" I told him why I had to adjust it, he said there was no reason I should ever have to adjust that bolt. I said it had a 10 plate in it and that the arm was sliding under the pump, he said it's supposed to do that when the truck isn't running. I said I don't think it's supposed to when the key is in the run position though. Then he said well that's the wrong plate for that pump anyways.
I may not know a whole lot about diesel pumps, but I'm surely not an idiot, I learn mighty quick. Don't particularly want to take it to some place that's going to try and make me feel retarded.

You were lost when you said "local diesel shop"
I would bet your pump is fine even after 300K...if not, it can all be fixed. That reman pump might have more miles on it anyway...if it isn't broke, I'm sure they don't throw money at them just to see what happens!

I was lost? Or I lost you? LOL.
There's a shop in the next town over that rebuilds/works on these pumps, and I gave them a call.
So what you're saying is the 'plungers/pump' side of the pump is fine, I just need to get the governor side of the pump fixed?
I guess I need to figure out what exactly entails "remanufacturing" a pump from various places...

First the correct answer is that a 215hp P7100 is a 887 or 913 depending on the year or if Ma Mopar ever replaced it.Power can be made with any P7100 as long as the internals are reworked and flowed. The 215 P7100's with the barrels and plungers in which pass off the excess fuel are the biggest hinderence to anyone that is doing a HP based pump. Also if it has the incorrect pump cam in it your gains will not be as much.
I have been through this with my truck just recently as when I returned from out at EEP last fall mine had a stumble and would miss on a cylinder at idle. While there it had governor springs,hi flow delivery valves and a cut plate done.It would run like a scolded dog early then lay down and die about 2600.I did some searching and some chatting and when all was said and done I had a new pump built for mine also by one of those local shops. It was another 215 pump, with the correct barrels and plungers, unmolested delivery valves(out of another application),correct pump cam, proper overflow valve and he then ran it on the stand.500cc's of fuel at 14lbs of boost and throughout the rest of the rack travel.
What did I then learn when we took the pump which was on my truck directly to the pump stand??.Why it had 340cc's of fuel at 21 lbs of boost, very limited rack travel, the incorrect barrels and plungers, along with the incorrect overflow valve. This is why it laid down on me on the jet and after 2600 it was a pig.It now runs hard through the middle and when we were done with the last baseline run on the jet I have more than enough fuel,I now need more charger.
So Dave I can offer this to you..
Doing a pump is not a cheap ordeal and if done cheaply power is compromised and egts could be a problem.Have someone who knows what they are doing do a pump and you will see a difference. With you being down in Pasadena I will offer you a chance to drive mine before you spend the money.I would not be scared to do the pump thats on your truck, however,I would take it to a reputable shop,no matter if they are local or long distance.....Andy
P.S.-I will PM you a number to reach me if your interested.

Where did you get the 'hack' pump from?

One thing that worries me about sending my pump out is not getting "my" pump back. Seems a lot of these companies want to get their hands on as many 215 pumps as they can, I wonder if they'd keep mine and just give me back a 'whatever' pump. I guess that's why you say to go reputable though.
I'm trying to follow along here : You weren't entirely satisfied with EEP or you were? I can't tell if they fixed your problem or created it.
2nd Question : how does one "turn the barrels" to get more fuel? This sounds like a more advanced/touchy modification to the pump settings.

I had a bosch pump shop do my 215 over. The only thing they found after 200k was some mild damage to some stop plate (forget what the part was) that caused it to surge a little when you abruptly let up on the throttle. Not a turbo bark, was a weird surge in RPM.
truck runs smoother but now I notice the injectors are in tough shape. Got some CPP's coming in soon.
