Question Water Separator, important???

I'm set to upgrade my stock fuel pump and fuel filter with a FASS 150GPH pump and a Catapillar fuel filter (WIX 33384) setup with primer pump. My question is how bad do I need to have a water separator? Thanks in advance.

it's a good idea to have one, the cat filter your using could be switched to include the water separator

Can you get a filter that does both, filter and separate water?

yes, sorry if i wasn't clear on that. the cat filter you have could/schould have a cross reference# to get the same filter with the separator. best place I'd look is a heavy equipment dealer, if not i know that cim-tech filters have this option, farm&fleet[ or fleet&farm-depends where you live]carries these

I believe in the WIX book the 33384 filter shows as a "SOF" filter and the ones with the water Sep is a "SOFW". Do I really need it though? I live in Southern Utah where the annual rain fall is around 5-6 inches. I've never heard of anyone "draining theirs around here. I know that condensation gets into the tank, and getting bad fuel is also a possibility which a filter change fixes.

The 33384 filter is about 10 inches long and holds almost 3/4 of a gallon of fuel. Wouldn't the water just sit in teh bottem of the filter with no ill effect?

the hard part about the water is that you had no control on how the fuel was handled before you. the gas station might have water in it's tanks-tank condensation ect. ect. I've owed my ram a little over a year and only had to drain once. it's cheep insurance to have one on your ride-it only takes one time to kill a part or motor[ i know that sounds extreme, and probably is, but you can't be to safe.] as for filters without separating- when the fuel is being pumped it gets agitated[no not mad ]the water mixes/dissolves with the fuel and can be passed into the motor
