I concur Shovel. Good advise. Been there done that. I have another 99 that I'm selling for a freind. The altinator on that truck would not charge above 1500 R's. By the way, Carquest gets $250 plus core for a new one!

What a useful piece of information, that's why I love this site!
I have had my 1994 for less than a year now and have been waiting for the alternator or regulator to go out completely as the lights go dim and bright each morning as I prepare to go to work. The old beater has 173K on it and pretty sure it is the original alternator.
Thanks again!

Yes the Fords, even thew new 6.0 uses glow plugs. But NOT all diesels use any type of heat to fire when cold, My Kenworth T=600 with a 500 Detroit has NO glow plugs or intake heat of any kind, and as long as the oil is kept at +20 or so it starts just fine, even at 25 Below Zero.

yes the new 6.0's have glow plugs. I got to see my engine tore down to the bare block when the heads gaskets failed a few months ago. They are right on the head and point directly into the cylinder. After the head gasket feasko and $6000.00 later for "non covered repair" I dumped that ford like a bad habit. I love this new cummins this thing will pull a freight train!!!!!

I have been stationed up here in the north since I bought muy 2001, the morning temps are usually about 18-25f through the winter. My intake heater has never missed a beat of cycling for almost 4 winters now. Original batteries, alt and yup lift pump

eating up batteries..
Read some posts about voltage draw on cold starts but I need help with a problem. Mine pulls down to about 10 volts on the guage when manifold heaters are on, is this normal? This is on an 99 2500 and I have gone through Five sets of batteries since new.. at $250 a crack it is getting tough to do.. every two years I have to replace batteries.. Any help on what the problem could be would be appreciated. Alternator appears to be charging alright and cables look good, what could be burning up these batteries so fast??

Saved me a trip to the dealer as well. I thought the coffee was not up to spec at first the other morning when I turned on the lights against the garage door before the daily trip to work.
