valve cover breathers...

I got paranoid after my oil leak scare... I thought I'd blown the tappet cover seal! after thinking "man, that would a really ruined my day", I went to Autostoned and got a couple push-in breathers and grommets, hit the #1 and #3 valve covers w/ a hole saw, blew all the debris out, put 'em back on w/ the breathers in. They're just the cheap chrome ones... and as much as I hate chrome, it actually kinda breaks up the all black engine compartment! (even my AFE outer cover is black)

I don't, but I did a little tweakin w/ them... I decided "why not just run 4 of them on the front 4 cylinders?" so I went back to Autozone and grabbed a couple more...

if you decide to do this, I would recomend using the breathers with the 3/4" diameter neck where it pushes into the grommet... I have one that is 5/8" and it just seemed sloppy in there (yes, it was a 5/8" grommet...)

so right now I'm running three of them... cyl's 2, 3, and 4

they're just cheapie $5 chrome push-in breathers in the "performance" isle at Autozone.

I'm sure ONE would have been sufficient, but

What is the purpose of this? The BB breather on the side is not sufficiant? Why would BB cause an oil leak on the Tappet cover. Does your engine have that much BB that it would cause more pressure then the BB breather can handle? Did it blow the Dip Stick out of the tube? Sorry for all the questions but this Mod just seems Stupid to me. Not bashing in any way I just dont understand.

Merry Christmas

more of a pre-emptive strike than anything... my truck doesn't have much blowby at all, but stuff pops up when you least expect it...

reading Fulmer's old posts about blowing his tappet cover gasket gave me the shivers... I'm pushing 55psi and will be laying some drugs to it before too long

btw, "seems stupid" and "not bashing" don't really go well together!

LOL I figured you would take it as bashing and i really did not mean it that way. What I meant by Stupid is there is already a breather on the engine, Also if it had that much pressure it would push the dip stick out some way before it would blow a seal so Putting all these breathers in the valve covers just seems Well lack for better word Stupid. But if it works out for ya, Cool beans.

Like I said Have a Merry Christmas.

no sweat... I pushed the dipstick out on my old truck once (my fault)

but you gotta consider, what happens if that dipstick is seated tighter than an old gasket? or if the 1/4" diameter of the 3ft long tube doesn't quite flow enough CFM!

I get where you're coming from... I guess I just got paranoid, and I figure 3 breathers means 3x as long before I have to clean/replace one

I bet you was walking down that performance isle and that chrome just smacked you right in the face and you said man I just got to have them. I have been thinking about them myself to relieve some pressure on the upper end. What part of the cover did you put them on?

Forrest didn't you try dumping the stock breather into the down pipe a few years ago? I was thinking of doing a similar deal but using a breather with a hose nipple for the outlet and running it into the down pipe.

I did... and that's what caused the popping of the dipstick!

I had it set up "right" as far as I knew... too much backpressure in a full exhaust system I guess... if it was just an open downpipe it may be a different story.

long story short "don't do it"

quite the opposite! I hate chrome!

when you flip a valve cover over, you'll see the natural spot to put them... there's a dead spot between the two rockers that works just perfect. it's the only place on the underside of the cover that has enough space for a 1.25" hole saw to clear the structural webbing

Has anyone put a breather on a 24v? I've seen quite a few 12vs with them, but no 24vs and I'm sure there must be a reason why. Any ideas?

blowing out the dipstick.... is that a sign of a bad engine? or JUSt a sign of bigger HP?

We bought a truck on RB auction which blowing out lots a oil out of the dipstick, to bring it home my dad only removed the oil filler cap, at home we put it back on, and drilled a hole into the oil filler neck (almost on top) put in a 1/4" fitting with an elbow, and put a 1/4 tube on there all the way down to the bottom of the motor, no more problems!

Forest... does the BB tube have a 1/4" outlet?

well, it's not a good thing if you're pushing the dipstick! could be a blocked road draft tube... it's like 1/2" or 5/8" diameter

probably because you typicaly see them on pulling trucks pushing BIG boost, and you don't really see that on 24v's

it obviously couldn't hurt... if you're not really pushing a lot of boost, I wouldn't worry... not that 55psi is a lot of boost, but I never really even considered it when I was in the 45 range... and actually, I never really considered it till I saw oil all over the ground! LOL! it was more of a "well, at least I won't have to worry about that anymore!" things than anything
