Upgrades

1998 24v 4x4

I would like to ask a few questions..

1. I just ordered the bully dog step six injectors, now im haveing second thoughts. Will this be to much horsepower for the transmission? It was just rebuilt a year ago.

2. Was thinking about cutting out the muffuler and putting in a straight pipe. How will this effect my truck? louder? more horse?

Thanks for any help!

So do you have any mods on your truck, or is it stock? You don't want to run to big of injectors on a stock turbo. If you straight pipe your truck it will get louder, and you will have some lower EGTs. Might get a little more performance

Those big injectors will give you nothing. You try will not let it fuel that much as you will get an overboost code. You will need a boost fooler, box of some kind Edge EZ at the least, at least a TQ converter and a valve body, and a turbo as 200HP injectors is a ton of fuel. Do you even have guages? Need those before you do anything!!! EGT, trans, and boost at the least and since you have a 24V you also need a Fuel pressure guage as well.

How much do you have to spend?

Edge comp 500
TQ converter 800+
Vave body 250+
Guages 400
Injectors of choice 300-800
Turbo 1000

Can't get a lot of horsepower cheap!! Have to find the happy medium between egts, driveablity, and $$$

Welcome to the boards.

Guages are needed due to exhaust gas tempertures, when you add fuel you add heat, lots of heat=bad for engine. Have to make sure it doesn't get to hot.

Need a boost guage to moniter the boost will different products. I had a leak in one of my boots and lost about 5 pounds.

Fuel pressure guage due to the weak lift pumps on the 24V. Bad design from cummins. Fuel pressure gets low you can do damage to the pump which is big $$.

Start with the guages, then get an edge comp and pierce the wire. That give you 130hp and a ton of tq, but you stock tranny will not last at all with a comp. So if you want to leave the tranny alone the best you can do is the edge EZ which is 65 hp. Get a tq converter and valve body and your tranny will hold around 400hp. A small set of injectors will be next if you don't have the money for a turbo. RV275 or EDM 1 or 1.5

BTW bullydog didn't ask any questions when you ordered those injectors? You need lots of air with 200hp injectors. SEND THEM BACK

Don't forget to open the intake with an aftermarket air system such as the scotty 2, AFE, or a BHAF.

4" exhaust will also help with your egts

I would see about exchanging them for #2s or there abouts. There are a few other things you need in order to run even small injectors. Gauges, Larger Exaust,
Better air filter system, Timming box and boost fooler. I would have to say the combo you listed would make you HATE your truck Just my $.02

Franks ... Sounds like good advice from these guys.

First thing I did is a Isspro Fuel pressure gauge > you need 12-15 psi at idle and not below 8 psi , driveing. The electric fuel pumps(lift pumps) go bad. The injector pump(vp44) needs that volume of fuel to lubricate its self. Is your vp44 goes bad thats $1500 +labor.

Id spend the money on keeping it running stock before ya hotrod it.

My next up grade will be shift kit and torque converter, Before Horse power upgrades

Well it seems like every one agrees to change the torque converter and valve body as one of the first steps. Where do I shop for these idems and how do I know witch ones to get? I already installed a light kit for the fuel pressure but now I see I should have went with the gauge. Live and learn....lol

And does it matter what exaust to run? I see there are alot of differnt kits...... or is anything better then what I have?

I'd suggest thinking about what level you're attempting to reach (Hp/TQ, E.T.) then calling one of the vendors and working with them to see what would be possible with your budget, or feasible to try to build in stages to reach your goal.
