Cool Twins

As I posted previously, I will soon be recieving a performance head, O-ringed, 60# springs, larger valves and ported and polished, and a high lift, long duration camshaft. What if I wanted to go with twin turbos, I would of course fab all the plumbing myself, but if I want to run my current hx35/16cm turbo, would an hx40 work as the second turbo, or would the second turbo have to something like an HBT2?

You would have to have something A LOT larger for the big charger in a twin setup.

Something like a HT3B from HTT, which is quite a bit larger than the HTB2.

I've got an hx50 or 55 or hy50 or 55, one of those I don't remember which, I will have to go to the shop and look at the tag. Will a turbo off a big truck work, that would be easy to get ahold of, I do have access to a big rig salvage yard free parts for the pickens for me, the owner is a friend of mine. Went and looked, it's an hy55.

A 40 is way too small as the bottom turbo. A 55 is getting close, although still a tad small. HT3B is probably the most common bottom turbo using a 35 on top and makes a very nice combination.

hx55 is a bit smaller, hx 60 is a bit biggger. look for a newer design turbo with the slot cut rightbelow the first set of blades. and a input measurement of 2.8 or so on the impeller side.

What would be the part number for the HT3B that I would need, just found a company that sells new for $498.00 less the exhaust housing or with exhaust housing for $568.00.

you can get ht3bs cheaper than that, search the web. and a 26 cm exhaust housing works well.

Yes, but the 35 is a little small on top to go with a 3b. I'd recommend a 35/40 hybrid on top (HTT will convert your stock 35 for cheap).

Also, if you stick with a 35 turbo on top, consider a smaller housing for the HT3B. The 26cm housing is most common, but smaller ones are available.

Also-- wastegates for BOTH chargers is a good idea. An external on a small housing HT3B should give a lot of flexibility.

kind of off topic

Sorry, no pics because I don't know of anyone who's done it yet.

But why is a wastegate a good idea on the top turbo only? Of COURSE it's a good idea for the big charger, too.

This allows a smaller housing on the 3b. This brings the big charger in much sooner. This means faster boost and more fun, without having your twins DIE on the top on like a small housing typically will do.

Spoolup of a 21 housing with the flow of a 36-- what's not to like?

You're gonna need a HUGE gate for the big charger in order for it to be effective. Think 44mm is MINIMUM.

If I can get an HT3B for less than $568.00 and I can get my stock turbo modified by HTT for cheap, then why does everyone want the ridiculous amount of money for a twin setup?

you will have some time in the piping, the oil drains and the exhaust is a pain to fit also. i thought the same thing, i have since built 2 sets and they both turned into a lot more work than i thought.

You'll understand why when you start to fab up the pipe. A friend and myself are currently learning this the hard way.
