doe anyone here run this turbo. i know its a hp66 with a .84 turbine housing ball bearing turbo. im thinking of running one of these with a built tranny and a quadzilla adrenaline and a set of 120s. i think it should be a good combo for upper 400s or maybe low 500s.

 

I don't know anyone running it. But it's a BIG turbo-- it will easily do upper 4s and past 500hp.

I'd say it's capable of closer to 600hp.

What's wrong with your SP66 in the signature?

I have the HP66 and let me tell you . BUILD YOUR ENGINE FIRST! It takes alot to spool up and I have almost no low end boost I have to lay into it to get my boost up. A area mechanic told me , now I dont know if its true or not , but he said I needed to either truly beef up my engine or add a smaller turbo to spool up. not to but in on your thread but does anybody know how to do that and can we use our old turbos for that. hope this will help you to.

 

crazyhorse it sounds like you might be in need of a set of injectors in aleast the 120hp range. i talk to a guy at work that is running one with a edge drag comp and 120s and says it spools up as fast as a 62/12

is your hp66 a ball bearing turbo cause the one im talking about is .

Crazyhorse, you're probably the only guy on DTR that has more air than fuel!

I'd personally go with a 150hp injector with that turbo-- something like a Mach4 or a DDP150.

Id like to do that upgrade but Im not sure about surge while towing, I think it will not be a good tow turbo. Im running the stage 1 right now (58) and like it a lot though, very linear power.

 

i do know a guy running this turbo with a set of 7x12s and it cools them well and they are rated at 240hp . and his has the smaller .70 turbine housing on it and not the .84 that comes with the stage 2

 

This, meaning the HP66? So he's running an HP66 with a tighter housing? Or is he running the 58 that comes with the smaller housing?

What does it mean when you say a .84 or .70 turbine housing? I know what the 14 turbine housing is in say a 62/71/14 turbo. Also, what size are the wheels in the HP66? Sorry, I'm still trying to learn as much as I can about turbos.

 

That number is the A/R ratio, or Area/Radius.

This tells you how wide is the cross sectional area of a slice of the turbine housing at a given radius from the axis of rotation.

Garrett has all this in their tech section on their site (www.turbobygarrett.com)

hohn its a hp66 with a .70 divided housing on it . he says it spools like his 62/12 did even when he was running his 120s and its spools really hard with the 7x12s . but he did say that the 120s and this turbo was a better towing setup

i really like it. I also run a spearco intercooler with it, I'm not sure how much it helps but its a nice combo. I was in the high 30's/ low 40's with the 120hp sticks. My trailer when loaded is approx 15,500lbs and my truck will pull the grapevine at 65mph and run about 1150*egt's. I'd say the spool up is comparable to a HTT 62/14 I ran one of those for about 5000 miles and I love the TN charger over the HTT. Price wise I don't know if you get that much more over the HTT but the warranty is really good and they're really tough and they sound cool when you shut the truck off. Lol...

 

Thanks Hohn, that helped a bunch. What are some of the more common turbine housings when you talking about them in reguard to A/R? I guess I mean, what do the consider to be big or small? Sticking with what I know, I know a 12 turbine housing on say a 62/65/12 turbo would offer good spoolup, but a 14 housing would help topend temps, while hurting spool up down low.

Also, do they usually use the A/R measurement when the turbo is non-wastegated?
