Turbo maint/upgrade?

I still have the stock hy turbo on my truck, no problems.
I have 225K+ miles on it and wondering if I should start looking to replace it?
I DON'T drag race, sled pull, etc. Just tow a camper and daily driving.

Suggestions, opinions, experience?

*Running 285 tires with 3.55 gears.

more then likely its fine as long as you let it cool down before shut down .
you can check the shaft play by removing the intake hose and see how much shaft play you have a little is ok but if you can hit the housing you are in need of a reman.
if you plan on making more power an hx is a good up grade if you like it now the hy is fine

Doesn't say in your signature if you have a exhaust brake but if you do, with a auto and 4" exhaust you'll be limited to choices if you want to keep the brake.

I have the 4" exhaust and no exhaust brake.
I have let the truck cool down regular, and no problems with the turbo.
I'm just wondering if its time to do something with a higher mileage turbo before I have a problem?
If so, assuming the hx is the way to go then?

just to give you an idea on how long a turbo can live I have 700,000 miles on my truck and its on its #2 turbo

Well, no exhaust brake makes it easier. I was considering the same thing this past winter (140,000 miles on mine, no problems) and talked to quite a few diesel experts and they all said I should keep on driving it. I'm a paraplegic and just don't want to deal with a broken truck out in the middle of no where when I could change it myself early in my garage. I probably will go longer with my hy but at some point I will probably change it out. All the experts I talked to said to just watch for excess oil leaking into the intercooler as being the first important indicator of the bearings going bad. Oil film on the inside of innercooler boots is OK but much more then that is not good.
Next for me on the worry list is my VP pump.

Ya we tow often in rural areas, reliable is important.
Guess i'll start looking for an HX and have it ready ahead of time.
