Turbo has a lot of Play

Checked my turbo for play this weekend and found that it has a lot. It does not move back and forth but it will go up and down quite a bit. I know this is not normal but my question is will it cause a vibration in the truck. I am not sure if I want to go with another HX40 or a B-1. If I go with a B-1 can I use the down pipe from the HX-40. Has this happened to anyone and does anyone have any advice on what I should do. Thanks for any help.

Justin, what I would recomend is that you go to www.piersdiesel.com and see what they say. I do know that if you can touch the side of the turbo with the wheel, you have problems.

MnTom,
It comes very close to touching the housing. I am going to see if i can measure it with a feller gauge tommorrow. Does anyone have any suggestions on wether I should go with a B-1 mor stay with an HX40.

You can make the shaft and wheel move with just light pressure, the medical compressors we do have a rotor (1-2 lb) over hung on the shaft, and the clearances are .0015-.002, if I apply too much pressure to the shaft, I can make it rub even if the clearances are set right, also depends on the temp of the bearings when you checked it, cold will have more clearance than hot. We set the Timken bearings on the larger pumps at .000 hot (installing) and Timken allows no more than .004 total, but when they cool down, the bearings will have about .002 clearance. If you have a thunk thunk in the shaft with only light pressure, you got problems. but as MnTom said, contact Piers
