turbo barking.....

ever since i installed my 4" straight pipe i get to hear my turbo a lot more but every time i shift (5 spd) i get some serious bark i like the sounds of it but is this doing damage? i driving empty 99% of the time but i can get it to chirp really loud if i want to. if its bad, should i install a bov or wastgate to not ruin the turbo wheel?

If you are barking it, ease up on the throttle slowly between shifts, instead of just letting off the throttle completely. Most barking can be driven around. A lot of barking will damage the thrust bearing, giving you excessive end float. Wastegate won't help (it controls max boost), a BOV will if you can rig it up to work properly, or buy the expensive electronic ones.

Whats the specs on the turbo?

ok but question is the truck is stock except for the exhaust....so if u bark on a stocker it will deteriorate the bearings too? i could see damage happening with fuel and boost mods but stock? stock turbo, holset, runs to 24 psi as per gauge

You're thrusting the rotor one direction to the other very rapidly, fair bit of force there. Doing it at higher boost will make it worse, but its still not good for it, even at stock boost levels. Learn to drive around it, or you're gonna be rebuilding them more often. The more responsive the turbo, the more this will be an issue.

There's a difference between "barking" and simply hearing the deceleration howl of the turbo during gear changes. Howling is normal but barking is not. Howling is when normal boost pressure rushes back through the turbo impeller when you let off the throttle but barking is when the turbo is creating a higher level of boost than stock and you shut off the throttle to change gears, all that pressure has to go somewhere and will push with enough force back against the impeller that it can violently stop the impeller and/or cause it to spin in reverse. VERY bad for any turbo and can even snap the impeller shaft. More common when guys try to get to much boost out of their stock turbos by spinning them up at dangerously high impeller RPM's. A stock HX35 is turning about 190,000 RPM at maximum stock boost levels. So you can only imagine how fast the turbo is spinning when someone is making 30+ psi with a stock turbo.
