Turbo Bark
Turbo Bark
Is is bad for a turbo to bark a lot. My turbo does it when i let off the gas when i am heavy into it. like when its at 35psi or more. does it hurt anything and what can i do to make it stop. all i know that is sounds cool. i say my truck has gas.

Barking a turbo can snap the shaft. Your 62/14 is stronger than your stocker it can take more abuse. When it barks the turbo wants to reveres the air flow, in turn your turbo wants to spin backwards. Let out of the throttle a little easer and this should help solve your problem.
There shouldn't be any sounds from the wastegate on a diesel---no pshhht like on a turboed gasser---maybe just the sound of the turbo spooling down from the tailpipe when you get out of the loud pedal, but non-gated housings do that too. Barking is heard from the air box and sounds like 'woof woof woof' or 'chuff chuff chuff' and is caused by what others have pointed out above. Not real good for the turbo...
The only noise youll ever hear from a turbo besides the whistling is compressor surge.
This occurs when a sudden change in pressure causes the compressor to slow down drastically.
On our trucks its not a huge problem. Its more of a problem on gas vehicles and others with a throttle plate. Snap the throttle closed, the air the turbos pushin out has no where to go and "stacks up" against the compressor, creating the sound.
On diesels that dont have a throttle plate (like your 2002) You should not hear anything except turbo whistling.. even if you let off the throttle hard your turbo is still spinning like it normally would.. throttle has nothing to do with regulating airflow in and out on these trucks.
Hope that made sense to you.
