Just regular old Dextron Mericon 3 and about 17 quarts if you drain your converter to which you should

If you use Dexron you need to add a bottle of Lube Guard. Otherwise any brand of ATF +3 or +4 will work without additive. For a new tranny I believe I used a full ase of fluid when I did mine. If it is just a pan and filter drop it will be approximately 8 qts if I remember right.

I'm told 4 qts for pan drop and filter change, 8 if you loosen up the valve body and drain behind it, around 16 if you drain the TC.

ATF +4 is what you really need, no additive. The rest is just a cheaper alternative.

Not to hijack but on my '97 2.7L 4Runner, I need to change out the tranny fluid & filter again. In the past, that's all I've done. She's got almost 150k on 'er now and still running strong. Should I, and how do I drain & refill the TQ?
If it's too complicated to explain in a post, link me to a website that explains it.
Thanks guys !!!!

unless your TC has a drain plug and it shouldn't. You will need to pull the tranny

Most diesel tranny experts recommend Dex III plus Lubegard black.
+3 and +4 are just Chrysler's scam to get your money.

I'm running amsoil in mine but DTT told me I could run dexron 3 or ATF+3 if I wanted with no problems. They actually told me not to run +4 because it has more limited slip additives so to speak (that's not whats in it but the only way I could describe it) so the factory tranny's shift smoother. They said that theoretically it could cause the tranny to slip sooner than normal +3 or dexron.
