tranny stalling engine.
tranny stalling engine.
dunno if you guys have heard this before.. but here is my issue... I have a complete ATS tranny (see sig) and live in a cold winter state... at night the temps are around 10 to 20 F ... here is the thing... if I don't plug my truck in at night and hop in it in the morning start her up and throw her in gear w/o idleing for 5 mins or so the transmission will stall the engine.. this prob is fixed by letting the truck warm up or keeping it plugged in.. what is the issue? no slip from the TC? thick atf? combo of both? what should I do? I called ATS and they said to deal with it, or they could swap out to a looser TC.. also that they only hear of this in much colder climates.
I’ve got a low stall converter and experience similar symptoms in cold weather. (My idea of cold weather is sub zero.) I've got a 12 valve so don't have the option to try Bob's recommendation
Mine did this in 90* weather. I have the GB tranny and TC. Cummins has since put a new block in my truck (had cracked 53 block) and it dont do it anymore. I thought it was the tight TC but it is fine now.
Use the trans fluid recommended by ATS and check the fluid level. My ATS, installed by ATS, has been trouble-free since installation. Looking at the BOMBs you have, it's possible your transmission is normal and your problem is engine-related with all that stuff working together to create a "weak idle" when cold. One clue is that you say after 5 minutes of engine warmup, or if you keep the engine plugged in, you have no problem.
