Your trans temps. are fine. If you start to get above 220, then look for extra cooling.

 

I agree, 145-160 is no problem at all. When I had my 1992 truck with an automatic I didn't like to see it get over 200, and that was my threshold for slowing down and/or locking out O/D.

The larger capacity aftermarket pans are good, but aren't substitutes for good driving practices. By that I mean, the best, most effective thing you can do is monitor your temp gauge and don't do things like pull hills at full throttle in O/D with a heavy load. With good driving practices, a good aftermarket pan can give you a bigger safety margin, and sometimes also lengthen the time between fluid changes assuming your fluid temp never went over 200 degrees.

I wouldn't mess with any additives. Just get a good synthetic oil, like Amsoil or Redline, or Royal Purple, etc.

I tow a 12k, 5ver on a regular basis and had heat problems on large, slow, grades on very hot days or when backing the load for a longer period of time or on a grade. All I did was get a Derale fan and mount it in front of the tranny cooler up front. Mine is switched but it can be temp regulated also. If you don't tow you will never need it.
