I've got 285/75/16 BFG Mud Terrains on the stock wheels. I'm on my third set and got 45K+ out of each of the first two. I almost pulled 50K on the first ones which is what led me back to them. Obviously not great for frequent highway driving, but they perform well and are the only tires I've experienced more than 28K out of. Keep them balanced and rotated and you'll be fine. Only problem is they are only a load range "D" in 285. You have to go down to a 245 I think to get back to a 10 ply tire.

Factory Michelin LTX A/S 22K, Bridgestone R273 28K, Firestone Steeltex A/T 24K,
BFG M/T 49K, BFG M/T 46K, next set should expire in about 30K.

How did the tires perform on your truck so far? If you didn't experience wander, got good mileage and economy, then stay with them. The tires that have the big knoby pattern with only a 40,000 mile rating will have wander (tread squish) and lower fuel economy, usually a cheap tire. Wall Marts liberator tire is a good example of that. The better performers will have high mileage ratings and harder rubber which will increase your economy. If you drive mostly hwy stay with a good highway tread pattern. If you drive in mud and snow or off road, then get a more agressive tread pattern.

I had an 86 K-5 Jimmy with a 6.2L Turbo and I wore out (blew up) 3 engines on one set of
BF All Terrain T/A's. I brag about how good they are all the time with that story. They must be good to do that. Right?
