Timing question
Timing question
NOW IS THE TIME TO BOMB! I'm getting ready to install a ( 4k GSK with 60# valve springs, 191DVs and an AFC spring) thankgiving weekend. What degree of timing is the best starting point for my 160 pump? I still have the stock injectors and turbo for now anyway. 370s will be coming in the near future, hopefully in january along with a HTB2 I've had for 6 months. After timing the pump what will I gain or lose by going up or down in timing degrees? I'm trying to get all the info I will need before I start my BOMBING next weekend.
Thanks for all the help in the past and the future.

Thats the problem I've been having there is a big differance between 16.5 and 19 What will be the differances bewteen timing at 16 and higher as far as EGT low end, high end? I still want to be able to tow about 7000lbs without toasting anything. I just don't understand the big differance in timing.
some is going to have get this through my thick head, I,ve still got gassers on the brain.
THANKS CRIS

Read about engine timing here http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/timing.htm
My 175 pump is set at 17*. I like the way it runs, but I have went to #10 plate.
If all you're wanting to pull is ~ 7K, set it higher and forget it.
I know lots of guys running 19-22*, but that has to be dead on the low end. With my set-up, it hits hard about 1750-1800 rpm, and will pull 40psi from 2000 to redline (or when my nerves give out cause of EGT's, need turbo)
Also, hard starting is not an issue. It has been into the teens and not plugged in, it started just like it did last winter when the timing was at ~12*.
Good Luck, and let us know how you like that turbo

Cris,
The higher you go, especially after 16*, the harder it gets on your headgasket. Just like Clint Eastwood, you have to ask yourself... "Do you feel lucky?" LOL. Even with the 4K kit you might want to stay under 18 to play it safer.

I would set the timing at 16.5. Its not that hard on head gaskets and your upper rod bearings. If you feel frisky go 20 degrees. I have set mine from 20 to 15 degrees and the best all around number for me is 17. Good bottom end power and good pull in the upper rpms.

Thanks guys great input thats why I love this site. So between 16+17 will be the best all around timing with my setup? What should I set the pump at when I put 370s and the HTB2 on? Keep the info coming, your knowledge will keep me from screwing up and making a big mistake. My goal is to get everything in the pump and the valve springs on this coming weekend and then DYNO it on the 4th at WAYNES. Then if my funds are right I'll do the injectors and the turbo between christmas and newyears, then dyno it again.
Thanks again and hope to see you on the 4th+5th of Dec in Jacksonville N.C. for dyno and drag racing

UPS just delivered my snap-on pump timing set (SP500) I'm just a happy camper, can't wait to do my bombs this weekend. Any other opinions on timing the pump I still want to know what you think the timing should be after I install a set of 370s and put my HTB2 on?
Thank agian for all the info you've all been a great help.

PDRs chart is alot of help, but it stops at 16 degrees. From what I can tell for every .1mm = 1/2 of a degree so 16.5 degrees = 6.5mm and 17 degrees = 6.6mm and so on? please correct me if I'm wrong. I think I will need to time my truck at 16 1/2 or 17 degrees from what every seems to say? What do you think I should go to with the 370s and the HTB2 ?

Anybody have the part number for the snap-on kit? and cost? I need to check my timing, it's yet again another unknown on my truck , and since EGTS are up there, I doubt it's been messed with, guess while I'm in there I'll get that KDP taken care of,,,if it hasn't been. I LOVE having stuff people have messed with before me. Never again, when I get a new one I'm going for stock to startwith lol.

The snap-on # is SP500 it comes with a dial indicator,DV socket, dial holder and a plate with bolts for pulling the gear off the pump. It cost me 230.01 shipped to my door from snap-on in 3-4 days. Call snap-on direct at 1-877-762-7662 BTW my local snap-on rep told me it would take about 2 weeks to get it for me.
Call them direct, FASTER,SAME PRICE just my .02

I think you should be ok with the 370's and the HTB2. You will need the delivery valves for the big noozles. Also I think your in line with your timing. Do you have a high flow exhuast and intake? I know you were working on a BHAF. but a high flow exhuast is needed to get ride of the egt's. A full 4" would be nice.
post some pictures when you get it done!
