i gotta find the malfunction in my fuel guage...the sending unit in the tank is good...i checked that already. i gotta trace wires up the frame to the ecm and check for a short or break somwhere. ran out of fuel for the second time last night and nearly wrecked as i was on an exit ramp doing 45mph and the powersteering went out and i was inches from nailing a guard rail.

has anyone ever ripped apart a wring harness to trace wires before?

 

I haven't done it on an 02 yet, but I always start at the tank connector. When you disconnect the wire the guage goes one dirrection, then when grounded it goes the other direction., then always check it by jumpering the sender wire to the ground wire in the harness. and go from there. If the checks show good, and the sender was good when you had it out, make sure the locking tabs on the tank connector are good and tight. I've been fooled by that one once and chased a ghost for a couple hours.

 

Mine does the same thing..... 1/4 to 5/16 tank and I am empty.... Now I keep an eye on the odometer, and make sure to zero it with each tankfull.....

ok i was thinking about it...when i put the new sending unit in...i tested it on a multimeter and it puts out the correct resistence.

I could play around with it some...and when i played around with it...i could get it to read full and empty only...nowhere in between...so if the sending unit puts out the correct resistence and the guage doesnt respond correctly (but does respond as it will go from full to empty) then it must be in the PCM which controls the gauge

 

Most wiring problems I've encountered have been when people enlarge the female connectors with their voltmeter probe.
Second place is bent male pins.
