you dont have to rewire if you dont want to. the amps are on the back of the speakers. just change the end of the wire to female spade connectors for your new speakers. you can use a factory wire harness adapter behind the radio to make that portion plug n play.
If you have the inifinity system (speakers with a tweeter in the A-pillar) and you put a 6x9 in the door esp without an amp you will be very dissaponted in the sound quality. Even a good 6x9 with a decent amp dont sounds so good compaired to the inifnitys. As far as wireing goes your rear speakers are driven directly off the head unit. The fronts are powerd by an amp on the speaker. The dodge service manual will tell you what colored wires are + and - for each door. I cant remmeber it. Anyway, this is my personal experance after doing both of my trucks. one with amp'd 6x9's and one with 6.5" compenents and a amp.
Those speakers should be head unit drivin and that might be the problem. I have the left the stock ones in the back of mine and they sound good. However I can never fault anyone for wanting to upgrade! the question you need to ask your self is what do you want to spend, and do you want to externally amplifie them. "better" speakers will require more power then a head unit can put out. If you want to amp them I like MB Quart. If you want to go without an amp I like boston acustic. If you have the factory service manual I'd double check just to make sure those speakers are not powerd. I know in a reg cab like mine the rear speakers are not powerd but in a quad cab when there on the doors maybe they are? Let me know I'm more then happy to give you my input and you can always goto a store and listen to some speakers just make sure if you plan on running without an amp you tell the guy at the store to run the speakers off a headunit only. They like to run them off expensive amps and head units beacuse they sound better that way.

not sure what speakers i would get but thought after christmas it would be nice to upgrade them as well.... but maybe i'll try this out first.
i know the right front door speaker isn't workin. that may be due to the factory radio being junk!! when i hit a good sized bump i either get no volume or WFO

I have installed a couple different speakers in my truck since I've had it and anything beats the stock infinity speakers. I think they sound like garbage....but that's just my opinion. I was never really pleased with the way they sounded.......the Bose in the Chevy's sound KILLER compared to the Infinity's.
I first installed some Alpine Type S speakers and powered them off an Alpine deck w/ a 50WX4 peak and I think 18 or 20W RMS. They sounded pretty dang decent and the clarity was better than I expected. Of course a small amp would have made them sound even better.
But seeing how my subs hit so hard, I couldn't hear the music that well over the subs so I swapped them out for the Alpine Type R 6.5" components with a tweeter. Although these require an amp so depending on how much work you wanna do........I highly recommend a set of components. The tweeter sounds incredible and the base from the 6.5" is great. The back doors I left the Type S speakers in because I really didn't need anymore sound out of the back of the truck.....just the front.
Alright well sorry for the ramble

I think the infinitys sounded good. at least compaired to the stock 6x9s and there even a bit better then the 3way 6x9 bostons in the other truck. I always had wonderd how the alpines sounded. No one carried them so I went with MB Quart QSD 216's 6.5" components and a pheonix gold titanium amp. I also left the rear speakers alone and running off the head unit. what amp did you go wtih and how did you wire it up? I was thinking bi amping vs bridgeing my 4channel since I only need 2. Also what did you do for mounting the 6.5s in the 6x9 hole? I cut 1" mdf to fit and recessed the speaker 1/2" into the mdf. My biggest problem was getting the wireing into the truck, where did you run yours in at? thanks
The intermitant speaker problem could be a lose connection or bad head unit but it sounds like the amp on the speaker is going since it goes full volum or almost none. I had inetermittent speakers too when my factory amps died.
i got the stereo in... works good, looks good but not real happy with the sound. i think i will have too replace teh speakers. RF still doesn't work checked the wires and they are all atached. so its replace time
i really appreciate everyones input on this as i have found that a general census is better than my spur-of- the moment thoughts

The MB Quarts are some sweet speakers too, those were my second choice but I lucked out and got a killer deal on the Alpines so I decided to give them a shot. Honestly if you're not using the 4-channel amp for anything else I'd go ahead and use it. That way you will still have the stereo instead of mono. I used a Rockford Fosgate amp ( can't remember what # ) but it's equivilant to around 600 watts for the fronts and rears.
The 6.5" speakers were a little bit of a pain to mount in the door, I ended up making some metal brackets to screw the speaker into...worked pretty good. The wires were actually pretty easy, I have my amps mount under my front seats so I pulled up the carpet and ran them under the kick panels and then through the rubber hose thingy in the door and to the speakers....wasn't hard at all.
