Speaker Question

I just recieved a early christmas present tonight . A pair of Infinity 6022i speakers for the front. They are 6.5 inch speakers. Are these the wrong size for direct swap? My trucks a 99 and i have the tweeters in the pillar, but i dont see "infinity" anyplace on the stereo. Also, i read on here some people say windows are hitting the speakers. I havent opened them yet and can exchange. Should i get a 6x9 instead? Do you ask for a low profile speaker or something? Thanks guys/girls.

i got a set of infinity 3-way's from best buy and they were a direct swap. not sure if the speakers are the same in the 98+ trucks or not but they had a computer where you put in your info and it tells you what they have that fits.

i put 6x9s in my truck. there was a little amplifier or somthin bolted to the old speaker, thinkin it was a small amp for the speaker. i cut the wires goin to the speaker and electrical taped it to the new speaker. not the best but it workd. and the 6x9 went right in.

Go to Crutchfield.com for all the speaker info you might need. It tell you what fits and what to get. Good place for research. JM2C

The problem with aftermarket speakers and stereos separately is this: The "high-end" factory stereos do not amplify the signal. They will have a separate amp, or will have small amps combined with the speakers (like what ol whitey found). When you put in aftermarket speakers, you're not using them for anywhere near their full potential. They'll still produce sound (and probably not bad at that), however, factory speakers/amps typically DON'T run the same impedance (ohms) that aftermarkets do (usually 4ohms), which varies the power into the speakers. Without replacing the head unit, the next best thing for you to do would be buy an amp with the same nominal power as your speaker (i.e. 60W RMS). Tap the speaker wires before any factory amplification for signal to the amp. You'll take full advantage of the speakers (especially high quality like Infinity) and really get some good sound.

As far as back spacing, you can always shim out from the face of the door panel. I would think most places have these, or make your own if not.

BTW. Leeboy, or anyone reading the thread, if you're thinking about an aftermarket stereo, get one with a remote harness. With a remote, you can buy a harness that connects to your steering wheel controls for the same (or similar) functionality. It can control directly, or through a wireless setup. I installed one in my brother's car, it works great, nice receiver, aftermarket speakers/amps/etc., still has the factory controls.

Good info about the remote harness....How much are they? I did go on Crutchfields website, and it says 6.5's fit, but everyone on here says 6x9 are the ones to go with and 6.5's need an adaptor......Thats why i posted...

Its been a couple of years, but I'm pretty sure this is the one that we used on my brother's car (this one is listed at about $60).

I did not order it, and I can't vouch for this company personally. However, I don't see how the SWI-X wouldn't work on one of our trucks.

As far as which speaker size is the best, you can typically get a four-way speaker in the 6x9 size, however, a good one will need a bit of depth. If you don't plan on explanding further, maybe the 6x9's would be the way to go (they can give a better response range). However, if you plan on upgrading in the future as well, you might want to go with whatever fits best in a component speaker.
