Smoke vs. Boost vs. Fuel

So, here's my question: If I run my Juice at 4x5 or 5x5 I get a lot of smoke. Since, I believe, smoke equals unburnt fuel, does that mean that I need a larger turbo and run that at a point to where I stop seeing smoke and only then would I need bigger injectors? Most guys say that injectors would be needed before a larger turbo (my tiny HY35 whistler), but it would seem that I need a larger turbo first....

Depends on what you want: quick spooling, top end, towing. If you get one thing, you take away from another. What do you do with your truck? The HY turbos are very small on the turbine side and can choke out a modded truck quickly so you can go a little bigger without sacrificing much spoolup but keep in mind what you want to have in the end so you can build it right the first time. Switching turbos 2 or 3 times is quite costly.

Yeah, I don't foresee going much over 400HP. It's a daily driver that hauls a light camper every once in awhile. Right now I'm looking for an HX-35/40 hybrid. But my HY does spool nicely to 35psi, though.... I guess I'm subconsciously trying to blow it up so I can rationalize a nice new turbo.... (especially to my wife: "Sorry, honey, but I have to replace my turbo. Just the cost of doing business, you understand....)

The perfect mix of air and fuel would be a light grey haze at wide open throttle! You will always have some smoke at low boost but once the turbo lights it should clear up. An HX35 from a manual truck with an adjustable boost elbow would be a good cheap upgrade for your truck. 35-38psi in stock form... and then you can get a small set of injectors if you want more.
