Silencer ring removal...

I had directions on how to remove the silencer ring...I took off the intake hose from the turbo to the air box and I want to verify I am taking off the right piece. Right inside the turbo is a ring holding in a cup shaped piece. Is the silencer the cup shaped piece??

This is on a 2001 Dodge 3500 CTD.

Thanks
Derek

Re:Silencer ring removal...

You are correct the silencer fing is the cupped piece. use a small blade to get the snap ring started then ease around the perimeter untill the snap ring is removed. the silencer ring will then come out. you should then be able to hear the turbo whistle. you will hear only a small whistle if you have the stock air filter when you start getting more air you will hear the turbo. I have a K&N filter and it sounds pretty good others with more bombs get more sound.

Might as well throw it in the trash because you'll never want to put it back in once you get hooked on the "whistle". ;D

Re:Silencer ring removal...

I was unable to get the ring out on mine. I guess I am afraid of breaking something because the outside ring was bending and not coming out. So, I just stopped what I was doing and put the hose back on. :-

Am I just not holding my mouth right or what?

Re:Silencer ring removal...

Use a medium to large size screwdriver to get one edge of the ring pryed up. You need to move it quite a bit because it is sitting in a groove. Then get a small screwdriver in between the part you have pryed up and the groove. Slowly work your way around until it pops out. Then remove the ring itself. Be carefull, but putting a small scratch in it won't hurt anything. Stuff a rag over the turbine if you are worried about something getting in there. You can do it!

OK, ok. I guess what I needed to do was see pictures of it. From looking at the turbo, the gap in the ring was at the very top and I couldnt see it. I feel silly now, cause it was pretty easy once I pried on each side of the gap :-X

Re:Silencer ring removal...

Mine was a persnickety little thing to get out as well. I think the advice of using a knife to get it started (be safe! ) is a good idea. Then use the smallest screwdriver your can to continue to pry it out. I used an eyeglass screwdriver.

Also, be careful that the area is well cleaned after you are done. Don't want to hurt the turbo!

After I did this, I installed a Fleetguard BHAF, and WOW!! ;D

Have fun!

not a thing, just noise. I don't have mine in and I like it. A little loud when towing, but empty, I like it!

Re:Silencer ring removal...

More filter area and longer filter change intervals. (Plus a little singing)
