Shifter ****

2001, 5 speed manual, how the heck does the shifter **** come off????

Don't want to sound like an idiot here, but...........

Since I bought the truck, the shifter **** has been turned in a position where the shift pattern is about 90d off. I have tried to turn it figuring it screws on, but nothing happens, and I tried to turn it hard enough until it eventually got to hurting my hands.

Since I have availability to a machine shop at my work, I wanted to make me a nice shifter **** out of aluminum, inlaid with brass. If someone could tell me how to get the old one off, I would greatly appreciate it.

I am mechanically inclined, I have restored many autobobiles in my days, and I am about ready to cut this thing off unless the manufacturers recomended method comes about this post. Thanks for any and all advice here.

pry off the little button where the shift pattern is located. under that you'll see a jam nut, the shift **** is threaded onto the shaft and the jam nut is supposed to keep it there.
once you pry off the cap, you should just be able to push it back into the correct orientation.

also were the stick goes into the trans there is a jam nut to take the stick off or to adjust it. This is an alumminium shifter that I got from a friend that works as a machinist. It has 357 MAG SPEDRACER ( Not enough room for 2 E's) I just dont like the way it feals so I havent put it on my truck.

Thanks for the info dodgezilla, I will be doing that today.

Chuxtrux, cool site for the shifter *****. I have a CNC, lathe and endmill in my area, all of which I use regularly when more important stuff needs not to be done. I want to add that "touch" to my truck with something that I did myself, like a shifter ****. You never know, some a/c panel and light switch ***** with color led backrounds in polished aluminum may even be in my future. I,m even considering customizing the emblems on the doors just to give it a different look to the outside, but first making my own hitch cover plate.

Thanks guys, I will post pics as I get time to make all these things.

Have to work a fine flat blade screwdriver or knife blade under the center cap on the shifter ****.

I used a Hurst shift **** for a late model Z28. Did have to make a threaded adapter for the installation.

Here is mine, it's the same one as Geno's. It is alot better then stock, looks great and fits my hand perfect!

I also changed the lever, it is a "Whiplash" lever, it has a curve in it that brings it closer to the driver. It is made by a fellow NW Bomber.

My dad has a spare Eaton Fuller one laying around and I was wanting to use it and I was going to use the air switches on the side to lock and unlock the front axel.
