I have a BHAF w/ heat shield and when climbing hills on these hot Az days w/air temps around 110 the engine temp climbs fairly high, and truck runs good but, I climbed same hill (Sunset Point) with more weight and air temp only about 85 degrees truck seemed to have more get up and go and did not run as hot. Will the Scotty make a difference that is worth the $? Or do I just bite the bullet and put in a 4" exhaust and does the 4" help with engine heat? Or just the exhaust heat? Or both? Trying to be prudent about money as I am satisfied with the hp of the truck as is now.

I don't know if the Scotty II will flow more or less air, but it will most definately be cooler air, thus more power for same amount of air. Whether it's worth the $ is your decision.

I can tell you that the 4in helped me about 60hp or more. I believe that it helps with egts since it can EXHALE greatly now. My cat was clogged when I got the truck. It would only turn 2200rpm tops, afterwards it would go 2800. I didn't have gauges on the truck prior to the exhaust upgrades. I could not keep up with a buddys auto version truck prior, walked off and left him aftwards..

The idea that changing the housing will drop the egts 150 degrees per 2in increase in size leads me to belive it will HELP!

Why?

 

I am not partial because I have an aFe but I will say that I have read others say that they arent happy with their Scotty and didnt see any difference. I cant tell you if one is better than the other but I like what I have. Works great.

 

My only concern with the Scotty would be the quality of the AFE filtration. If someone would make the Scotty with a PG-7 element, I'd feel better.

That said, the way that airflows through the Scotty makes it filter better. The dirt particles don't have a straight shot into the filter. The air can make the sharp turn (to enter the filter from the side) better than the dirt can.

I suspect this is part of the reason why Rod has said that they noted no increase in Silicon levels in oil analysis after installing the Scotty.

Rumor has it that AFE's quality control has slacked off a little as of late.

I'm personally looking at a custom system using UNI foam filters.

Drawing hot underhood air does little to lower egts.
My main reason, I've seen more than a few that have become disconnected without the owner's knowledge, sucking unfiltered air for who knows how long.

We have actually switched from the aFe filters to the dual stage UNI filters in both the Scotty II and Ram Air III. UNI, of course, promised us better filtration AND better airflow. Early tests with the Ram Air III appear to support their claims, with an ADDITIONAL 50F EGT reduction beyond what we got with the aFe element. We haven't done any testing with a Scotty II yet, but the filters will be ready in about a week so we'll get some numbers and let people know.

Thus far, the only people that we're aware of who weren't happy with the Scotty II system were those running very little extra fuel. If your truck is 300 HP or lower, an aftermarket air system of ANY breed won't help with EGT reduction as the stock system flows plenty of air for it.
