SBC Slipping
SBC Slipping
Ok guy's brand new practically about 2500 miles on the clutch just got some injectors,So wanted to try out the truck at a stop light ,5-10 psi build and let the clutch all the way out but no go, so pushed the cluch back in got out and smoke came from underneath, its the SBC FE i have 150hp injectors, edge comp, stock trubo, Why did it smoke isnt that SUPPOSED to be a good clutch sure did cost a good bit? Still shifts fine and seems to not slip once i get going on level 5 but with a boost take off sure did. Thoughts anyone is that gonna happen with boost lauches? Sure hope it's not time for a dual disk already.
It depends on the material. The Feramic would probably be alright.
I had an old Ford that was my daily driver. The rear main was leaking for a while. Until I could take it off of the road for a clutch change, I would prop the clutch pedal down and then shoot brake cleaner up into the clutch.
Ya do what ya gotta do .........

How did you build boost? Holding the brake down and slipping the clutch? If so, that's very hard on a single disk. Can you launch hard if you leave the line with higher rpm's but no boost built?

Someone school me, but I don't see how you build boost with a standard without slipping the clutch and holding the brake. I can't think of a much more abusive practice. And I wouldn't expect a single street clutch to be happy afterwards.
That's one of the downsides to a standard, zero boost launchs. But, on the otherhand, we can run much higher hp with basically stock items, and much less $ than the auto guys.

I tried to see if I could spin my rear wheels once with my OFE. It slipped. I don't think it can be done with my mods and especially since mine is an OFE. Haven't thought about talking to Peter about it though. The only time it did spin was when I didn't want it to going down the drag strip. I figured it wouldn't spin on the street so I'd do 2 wheel drive launches.......it spun in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Guess the drag strip was a little slick. I did 4 wheel drive launches after that. Otherwise, the clutch hold my mods well. I am at the hp threshold for that clutch afterall.
Once the FE starts slipping (slipping clutch to build boost) the heat builds up EXTREMELY fast. Once its slipped... it will continue to slip until it cools off.
I had an OFE 13" that wouldn't hold 440HP.... I dont think an FE would have held that much HP either. (special case... hard feelings... I wont get into it here)
Basically what I am saying is the FE will hold great... just dont slip it.

One good thing is that the FE won't glaze. Drive it normally for awhile and the clutch will reseat itself as the flywheel wears.
I did a torture test on the last clutch (FE). It kept coming back for more.
