Questions for increase in power on stock engine

Hi, I just signed up My Dad has a Dodge Cummins 4x4 Extend cab (first year 24 valve, '98?), 35k mile, and he pulls a 35' fifth wheel camper. He is getting ready to have the ttrans bands adjusted and a shift kit install.

I am looking for web sites and info on how to increase hp with a stock engine, IC and turbo. I have a decent understanding of turbo operation, IC, injectors, fuel pumps, etc. from owning a Turbo Buick for a few years.

I see that the wastegate actuator is adjustable. My questions are:
1. What is the stock boost, and can I tighten the wg a couple turns to increase boost safely, and how much hp increase is that?
2. Is there a chip upgrade that is effective for the cost?
3. Will the stock fuel pump and injectors handle the mods/hp?
4. Any special tweaking of other parts for performance? I've seen downpipe wrap and filter upgrade as possible mods.
5. Anyone running propane injection? I saw that on TV and they just came out with this for my car also, alchohol inj a few years earlier.
Thanks for any tips 8)

Re:Questions for increase in power on stock engine

Rich, I thought about posting it there, but wasn't sure. I'm wanting to learn some basics on the truck prior to the mods also. I've been searching around on the board and Google, and still am looking for some good basic engine/turbo info, and minor mods to add some power. I would be interested in a basic upgrade "performance recipe" for the truck. Any sites with basic info on the truck such as stock boost, max boost allowable on stock turbo, etc.?

Wow, thats a lot of info you need in such a short question. Without making this a huge response, I will tell you to look at all the posts and sites you can. There is tons of info to be learned from reading what guys are doing or have done. And many links come with the info too. Here is a few to look at. Turbo Diesel Register, Dodge Ram, and Diesel Ram.

For your questions:

1. Stock boost is around 16-19psi. Dont mess with the wastgate. You could loose power. If you crank up the boost without a boost fooler or box you will set off an engine code. Boost is needed and comes with more fuel. Not to make power by itself.
2. Yes. There are many many chips or boxs you can choose from. I think they are the best bang for the buck. But there are nessesary steps to take for every increase in power to make it reliable.
3. Yes, the stock injectors will handle power upgrades from a box but they can also be changed for more power. The Lift pump (fuel pump) is capable up to 350-400 rwhp but needs to be watched closely in case it dies, so you dont fry the VP44 injector pump.
4. No special tweeking. Just do your modification in the correct order. Gauges are a MUST HAVE 1st item. If you dont know what you motor is doing then your just asking for problems. Gauges are boost, pyrometer, fuel pressure, and trans temp if you have an auto. Then after gauges you can add power but you must make sure the exhaust and intake filter are up to the job and both of those in stock form are not!
5. As for propane or any other modification you must know what your getting into before you add the modification. I dont know of to many guys who run propane. You can get all the power you want with other stuff.
6. Just to add a little you didnt ask...Only use a Fleetgaurd oil filter or approved Cummins oil filter. Any mods will stress a stock auto. Depending on how you drive. If you tow a lot you should really choose your high power mods carefully. You could be looking at a new tranny. The fuel pressure is very important and needs to be checked. Have fun, this is a great truck and motor. Welcome to the site.

Re:Questions for increase in power on stock engine

OK, I have a question on sliding the fuel plate forward, and I figured rather than start a new thread, I'd just jump on this one. I have a '97 12V 5-spd.
I was tinkering around with my truck today and I took the air intake connection off to get to the AFC. I removed the banjo bolt and moved it out of the way, but I can't get to the breakoff screw, because it's still covered by the 6 fuel lines to the injectors. Did I miss something on the instructions? I am in desperate need of some more HP!
