Question for you guys with aftermarket torque converter's
Hey guys. As most of you know; my rear end went out a while back. I got it fixed with a nice tight Dana 70 with 90k miles on it. So far it has not given me any problems but i have a question for you guys. My truck seems to engage into reverse really hard. Drive is not too bad, but still rougher than i think it should be, and reverse just seems way to hard. Im wondering if this is what killed my old rear end, and if my new one will soon live the same fate? I sure hope not... It has been like this since i installed the single disc Goerend. I love the converter, but i think i need to do something about this as soon as i can figure out what i can do to make it less harsh. Idle is where it should be, and i really dont want to set it any lower. So do you other guys with aftermarket TC's have a hard engagement into gears, or is it smooth? I just sent Dave an e-mail about this, and i will see what he says about it. Would this even be enough stress on the rear end to hurt it, or am i just making a big deal out of something that isnt? It just worries me; but it seems like even guys who abuse them pretty hard dont really have much problem out of them. I THINK the reason my old rear end went out was because a bearing went bad in it. The ***** had pitting in them, and one tire was wearing bad where im guessing the bad bearing was causing resistance. Anyway. Thanks for any help guys. Im just trying to make sure im not shelling out another $800 i dont have right now for another rear end
.

I don't think there is anything to worry about, as the torque converter especially if it is tight(89% or 91%), will jerk into forward or reverse gear. Unless it kills the engine it sounds about normal. Check your u-joints and slip yoke for signs of looseness/wear, as this can cause a banging/slamming sound. There really should not be hardly any banging sound from engagement.
Dana 70 is an almost bulletproof diff, as long as you have proper fluid in it, and pre-loads, and backlash have been set properly, there are usually very few problems with them.

Well i feel a little better now. That first rear end going out just had me worried though.
My truck never stalls, and it doesent bang; but the whole truck kind of jerks. I figured it was norma, just wanted to double check. My buddy was outside when i put it in reverse yesterday and I was in his wet yard(kinda muddy), and he said my tires spun real quick when it engaged, but no clunk or anything. The rear end felt great when it went in, so I think it should be fine. Thanks guys. if anyone else has anythign to add, please do

My original hp 89% torque converter did stall mine out 4-5 times, until they swapped it out with new one I have now in my sig, no more problems, but you better have your foot on the brake good, because boy does it launch.
